How did you attract/ address your audience? In order to attract and appeal to my audience, I have used appropriate language throughout my media product. The contents page has a lot of reference to festivals such as the Polaroid's at the bottom of the page which was also seen on the front cover. This would attract my target audience because they enjoy going to festivals and the music played there. The language used in the double page spread also appeals to the older end of the target audience (the target audience is 16-20) as it refers to specific clubs such as “BOHO” in Ibiza. There are lots of exclamation marks throughout my media project to excite the reader, for example the editors letter is opened through the phrase “Hello!” The model would also attract consumers as she is similar to them: youthful, fashionable, happy. The banner at the top of the front cover would also attract “indie” readers: By branding the magazine “number 1” it attracts the target audience as it must be a good magazine if it was voted number one in the whole of the UK.
How does your media project represent particular social groups? My colour scheme throughout my magazine consists of darker colours such as plum and green, but also includes some brighter colours such as yellow. This appeals to a more mature audience as younger readers are drawn in through bright colours. I have included a wide variety of fonts throughout my product, in order to keep the reader interested and also appeal to them. For example I have chosen to write the main heading in more curvy, fluent writing again appealing to an older audience as it looks quite realistic. My artist is happy, young and pretty, everything that the reader wants to see and can aspire to be. Her clothing reflects the kind of social group my magazine is aimed at. She is wearing a chequered shirt which includes colours seen in my magazine (eg. Plum, green, yellow) Her clothing refelcts a more indie side to her as well as her long, wavy hair. Her pose also shows that this magazine is a music magazine as do the headphones. At the beginning of the course I constructed a reader profile which was created to guide me through my production. Reader Profile Age: 16- 20 Gender: Mainly girls What would they be wearing? Barber jackets, Chequered shirts, Chino’s, headscarfs, baggy jumpers. Where would you find them? Gigs, Festivals, Concerts, music shop, Listening to: Ellie Goulding, Marina and the diamonds, Jamie T, Jack Penate, Bombay Bicycle club.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product? I have chosen IPC media to publish my music magazine “Turn It Up”. I have done this for a number reasons: ,[object Object]
The already own NME and Uncut who are popular music magazines.
NME is a more pop genre and Uncut is a rock magazine so the introduction of an Indie magazine would add variety to the label.
They also have 7 magazines which are already in the entertainment industry such as TV and satellite week and TV easy.IPC Media published this statement on their website “IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone, with a focus on three core audiences: men, mass market women and upmarket women” The fact that IPC media “offers something for everyone” fits in well with my magazine because it fits within the indie genre and would open a new market to IPC media and therefore attract other readers to their other music magazines such as NME.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Looking back I my preliminary task, I have improved my use of technical codes. Firstly the colour scheme is very different as my music magazine incorporates more variety in colour, making it more interesting, whereas my preliminary task had one main colour which was pink making it quite dull. There was also no other pictures apart from the main image, which made the product look less professional and very uninteresting to the reader. A significant part of my progression was learning about the journalism involved in the creation of the double page spread, for example the interview with the “pop star” . Through research and analysis of other interviews with artists, I have learnt what type of questions which are typically found in a music magazine. The contents page from my preliminary task was very poor, again it was all one colour and lacked content, however it was only a moch up. Through creating one for my music magazine, I have learnt how to include relevant details and split the information into sections, to make it clearer to the consumer. Although I had included an editors letter, it did not have a picture and the general quality was not very good. The quality of the images have also improved as I learned more about lighting, position, pose and therefore produced a higher quality image. For example in my main task, the lighting on the models face is much lighter and therefore produces a clearer image. The preliminary photograph also looks quite cold because the lighting is dark, therefore repelling audiences.

  • 14. There was also no thumbnail images, which made the product look less professional and very uninteresting to the reader. A signifigant part of my progression was learning about the journalistic conventions involved in the creation of the double page spread. Through research and analysis of other interviews with artists, I have learnt what type of questions would be typically found in a music magazine. The quality of the images have also improved as I learned more about lighting, position, pose and therefore produced a higher quality image. For example the lighting is quite dark in the image used for my preliminary task due to my choice in cameras, the lighting for my main task is brighter and therefore attracts the reader more. This is because I used a more high quality camera. The pose has also improved as I have positioned the model in a way so that the main focus is her face.
