Heri Adventist Hospital is located near Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, a few kilometers from the Burundi border. The hospital has been conducting evangelism and fostering church growth in the area since 1961, with thousands of Adventist members now in the local catchment area. Facilities include dormitory-style rooms for patient families to stay as well as outpatient clinics in 7 nearby towns. However, the general wards and old hospital buildings are in poor condition and need upgrading. The patient to nurse ratio also exceeds government requirements, so strengthening the nursing department is urgently needed. Various medical equipment upgrades are also required, and the roof recently blew off requiring repair.
1. Heri Adventist Hospital, Tanzania, is near Lake Tanganyika which is the longest and
second deepest freshwater lake in the world. It is a few kilometers from the Burundi
border and about 70 kilometres (45 miles) from Kigoma (old Ujiji where Stanley
found Livingstone).
Evangelism has always been fostered at Heri, and a church building was dedicated in
1961. In 1963 the total church membership in the area was 410 in seven scattered
groups. Now there are thousands of Adventist members within the immediate catch-
ment area of the Hospital.
A long row of dormitory style rooms provides for families of patients to stay
nearby, poor but a place to stay.
A rotating number of young interns from Europe and South America work at this
hospital every year.
In addition to the services offered by the hospital, outpatient clinics are operated, at
7 satellite towns: Kigoma, Kasulu, Tutuo, Urambo, Heru Juu, Mpanda and
Tabora.
The general wards and old hospital are in a poor state of repair and need serious
upgrading.
The patient/nurse ratio is excessive and does not reach the requirements of the
government. There is an urgent need to strengthen the nursing department of
this hospital.
The laboratory needs an additional microscope; outpatients needs an otoscope and
stethoscope; pediatric clinic needs another hanging scale, etc.
Recently the roof blew off and now requires urgent repair.
Health Ministries is the right arm of the message and this is still so at Heri.
