      • If you’re turning 65 be aware of the mass mailings you should start to receive through the mail from multiple insurance carriers.
      • This could represent the start of your confusion process about what to do next. Don’t get frustrated, take a moment to organize everything, file the packages, and maybe contact a carrier or two.
    3. Getting Assistance
      • Now that you’ve decided to move forward with signing up on Medicare, you need to choose either a provider or an agent to work with.
      • Make sure that whomever is chosen, they are informative. Don’t feel rushed to make a decision if you haven’t been provided with a thorough overview of your plan options (PPO, HMO, PFFS, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Prescription Drug plans).
    4. Where To Begin
      • The first step is to determine if you are ready to retire or will you keep working; will your employer offer you coverage, if so will the costs be higher?
      • If you’re not currently working then it’s assumed you will automatically apply for Medicare coverage.
    5. Choose A Carrier or An Agent?
      • Most providers will either setup an in-home appointment, seminar invitation, or have someone explain the information over the phone.
      • An agent represents multiple carriers and most are now working online to reach a larger targeted audience.
      • There are drawbacks to each option considered : carrier appointments (only promote their plan options), seminar (timed event, large gathering, generally discuss just one plan, no one-on-one consultation), and agent phone consultation (no in-person visit, usually conducts enrollment via online or will email enrollment packages).
    6. Define Your Expectations
      • Have an idea what you’re looking for by explaining your current plan; this gives the agent an idea of where to start . Be sure to determine if your existing physician’s accept Medicare, otherwise you may need to choose a new doctor!
      • Next your representative should give you plan options available in your county, the pros and cons of each plan, and the pricing.
    7. Apply For Coverage
      • Once you’ve narrowed down your options, make a decision. It’s only natural for many people to procrastinate on making a decision, but this is health coverage and there are deadlines to consider ( be sure to inquire with your agent)
