2. Male Pattern Baldness
What is Male Pattern Baldness ?
This is the most common type of hair loss in men. It usually
follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on
the crown. The typical pattern of male baldness begins at the
hairline. The hairline gradually recedes to form "M", "O", "A", or
"O+M" shape. The existing hair may become finer and shorter.
The hair at the crown also begins to thin. Eventually the top of
the hairline meets the thinned crown, leaving a horse shoe
pattern of the around the sides of the head. Most men are
genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness. It is the effect of
hormones on the hair follicle that produces male pattern
baldness. This loss is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
3. Female Pattern Baldness
What is Female Pattern Baldness ?
This is the most common type of hair loss in women. It usually
follows a typical pattern of overall thinning on the crown. The typical
pattern of female pattern baldness is different from male pattern
baldness.
A woman who notices the beginning of hair loss may not be sure if the loss
is going to be temporary or permanent. For example, if there has been a
recent event, such as pregnancy or illness that may be associated with
female pattern baldness. The hair thins all over the head, but the frontal
hairline is maintained. There may be a moderate loss of hair on the crown,
but this rarely progresses to total or near baldness as it may in men.
4. Post-natal Hair Loss
What is Post-natal Hair Loss ?
Pregnancy can have a wonderful effect on a women's hair. From the
fourth month of pregnancy the hair is usually at its best. It is shinier,
more abundant, more manageable, less greasy, less dandruff and scalp
problems. This improvement in the hair is because of the increase on
female sex hormones (mainly estrogen).
But after the baby is born, there is often a great loss of hair due to
these hormones falling back to the normal level. The hair, which is lost
after childbirth, is the hair that would normally have fallen out during
nine months of pregnancy but didn't and will now fall out from the
second to the sixth month after the baby's birth.
Post-natal hair loss affects approximately 40% of all women with
children and can be very frightening and upsetting experience. Although
new hair is not produced, follicles remain alive, suggesting there are
possibility of new hair growth. If left untreated, it will become permanent
hair loss. Hair loss is also evident in breast feeding women.
5. Premature Hair Loss
What is Premature Hair Loss ?
Premature hair loss means that the hairs start to drop gradually during
adolescence and finally lead to baldness.
The hair follicles of people who are suffering from premature hair loss
are shrinking gradually and finally the hairs are replaced by the fine
ones. The anagen phase of the follicles also shorter and the ratio of
telogen follicles is higher. Beside that, their scalp is thin and the hair
root also weak and hair drop off easily. Serious cases finally will loss
both of fine hair and follicles.
The causes of this problem are still unknown. However, the patient usually
has more clearer family history, genetic and their androgen and DHT level
in the blood is higher. Beside that, 5 a reductase level in their blood is also
higher compare to normal people. 5 a reductase level in occipital hair is
lower than the scalp of front head and androgenetic hair loss usually occur
at front head. All this symptoms shows that 5 a reductase might be one of
the causes of androgenetic hair loss.
6. A. Grey Hair
What is Grey Hair ?
Our hair colour is determined by the quantity, distribution and types of
melanin within each hair.
There are 2 types of melanin and our hair colour is based on the
combination of these two colours:
A. Eumelanin: - Dark red, brown to black.
- Asian people have more Eumelanin than Phaeomelanin.
B. Phaeomelanin: - Light yellow to red.
- European people have more Phaeomelanin than Eumelanin.
Grey hair occurs when bulbar
melanogenetic cells produce less melanin.
Some people do not experience total white
hair but grey hair with light brown.
This is because our bulbar melanogenetic
cells still produce melanin but at
insufficient level.
