Editor's Notes

  • So 1 in 30 cows in that field is destined for a Big Mac
  • So if you think we have a lot of franchises, it’s actually less than normal McDonald’s owns the land on which its restaurants are built, so in addition to a proportion of sales, it also collects rent from franchisees.
  • The original McDonald’s opened in 1940 in San Bernadino, a suburb of L.A. The McDonald’s brothers realised most of their profits came from one menu item: hamburgers. In 1948 they invented the ‘Speedee Service System’ and began serving hamburgers only.
  • 1954 Entrepreneur Ray Kroc buys the rights to franchise McDonald’s 1955 First “McDonald’s Inc” site opens in Des Plaines Illinois 1958 34 locations 1959 102 locations
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxXDD_7lgYw
  • (1971 advertisement) The company arrives in Australia in 1971, opening at Yagoona
  • Most Australian stores now have a McCafe and 600 worldwide
  • Burger King and Yum! followed their lead.
