  2. 2. Storage Devices Diskette drives, tape drives and hard disk drives are examples of magnetic storage devices. These devices are used to write and read data to and from each devices. The surfaces of diskette, tape and hard disk are coated with magnetic material which can be magnetized. The surfaces of disks and magnetic tapes are coated with millions of tiny iron particles so that data can be stored on them. Each of these particles can act as a magnet. The information stored in a disk can be read many times without affecting the stored data. But the writing of new data erases data previously stored at that location of the disk or tape.   5. 5. Storage Devices Optical storage are any storage device that uses laser light technology to retrieve and store data such as VCD,CD and DVD or Blu Ray Disc. Majority of optical storage devices are "Read Only", meaning that they can be read from, but cannot be written to. But they could be used in any player, e.g. computer, laptop, DVD players or even Xbox’s. Anyway we have both "writable" and "re-writable" CD-ROM devices. These devices are capable of both writing to, and reading from optical disks. However, writing data with optical devices is time consuming and less reliable than recording with magnetic storage. Also the capacity and memory of a disc is limited at about 80 minutes or 700MB which is less than a solid-state state devices. The advantage of solid-state storage is the fact that it contains no mechanical parts. Everything is done electronically. As of this writing, flash memory USB devices can store up to approximately 16 gigabyte (GB), whereas hard drives commonly hold 100 GB or more.
