The embassy, the consulate or the High Commission. The article will point out the major differences with brief explanation.

In a host country, there is only on ambassador located in the capital, while there maybe many consulates in the major cities. For example, in the Unites States, there is only one German Embassy in Washington DC, United States, based in the capital city of America – Washington D.C.
  4. 4.  But there are a lot of consulates in big cities: German Consulate in San Antonio, United States, German Consulate in Seattle, United States, German Consulate in San Diego, United States, German Consulate in Virginia Beach, United States, German Consulate in Oklahoma, United States, German Consulate in Boston, United States, German Consulate in San Francisco, United States, German Consulate in New York, United States...
  5. 5.  Totally, there are 40 German consulates in the United States. In small country, there is usually one embassy and no consulate, for example Germany Embassy in Singapore .
  6. 6.  An ambassador is the representative of the head of state and government of their country in the host country. The ambassador takes the responsibility for the operation of the embassy and consulates. He also takes the responsibility in explaining and informing the views and policies of politics to the host country. All the aspects related to the relationship between 2 countries: media, diplomatic, economic, commercial and security issues. There are rarely countries that have the embassies and consulates in all countries and territories of the world.

But consulates are put in other major cities, tourist cities in which there are a great amount of expatriate populations. The consulate takes the responsibility in the visa, passport, immigration, and some other document issues. Besides, these consulates take the responsibility on solving the problems relating to birth registry, death registry, notary functions, child abductions, forced marriages.
