  3. 3. TAUHEED AL-ULUHIYYAH : To assert that only Allah alone is the God (al-ilaah), we must first reject any other (false deities which people may ascribe) to be God. “LAA-ILAA-HA -IL-LALLAH” NOTE: In this statement it contains 2 aspects: [1] NAFI – Negation [2] ITSBAT - AffirmationAll Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  4. 4. This statement of TAUHEED in Islam is concise, yet explicit and clear, as it firstly removes any ambiguity by negating all ‘others’ which mankind may have erroneously regarded as god (gods or goddesses), prior to asserting that Allah SWT is the Only God.All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  5. 5. If the negation aspect is not done, our notion of the Absolute Oneness of Allah, indeed, would be compromised. Without which, syncretism may occur. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  6. 6. This “negation-assertion” process, teaches us Muslims that, to be worshippers or devotees (‘AABID) of Allah, we must also be wary of every falsehood, which we are to consciously negate or deny, in order to assert (purely and sincerely) the Truth of the Absolute Oneness of Allah. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  7. 7. TAUHEED in Allah SWT must be opposed to SHIRK Only ALLAH alone is to be regarded as God (Divine), whilst all others are termed “TAGHUT.”All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  8. 8. Therefore to have the knowledge of what opposes TAUHEED is also necessary (obligatory). We shall have to also learn to identify what are the “ TAGHUT “ and what constitute “SHIRK”, so that we can avoid them all.All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  9. 9. Allah SWT alludes to these in the Qur’an: For We assuredly sent amongst every People a messenger, (with the Command) "Serve (worship) Allah, and eschew the ‘Taghut’ * (False gods, all powers of Evil)“ (Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 36)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  10. 10. “whoever rejects ‘Taghut’ * (False gods, all powers of Evil) and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.” (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 256)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  11. 11. “Allah is the (Waliyy) Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness, He will lead them forth into light.” (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 257)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  12. 12. “Verily Allah does not forgive the ascribing of divinity to aught besides Him (i.e. commit SHIRK *) , although He forgives any lesser sin unto whomever He wills; for he who ascribes divinity to aught besides Allah (SHIRK * ) has indeed contrived an awesome sin.” (Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 48)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  13. 13. Behold, Luqman said to his son admonishing him: "O my son! Join not in worship (others) with Allah: for ascribing partners to Allah i.e. false worship (SHIRK *) is indeed the highest wrong-doing.“ (Qur’an: Luqman: 31: 13)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  15. 15. “They disbelieve(commit KUFR) who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One God. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them. Why turn they not to Allah and seek His forgiveness? For Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 5: 73-74)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  17. 17. Say: "O people of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: that we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with Him; that we erect not from among ourselves Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say: ye! "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allahs will).“ (Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 64)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  18. 18. PREVIOUS LESSONAll Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  19. 19. The term “ “ pronounce ‘SHIRK’ – means “partner; associate; one who shares; etc.” Therefore in Islam we refer this to the sin of : “associating or ascribing to Allah others, as partners .” “falsely setting up or ascribing partners to God from amongst the tangible objects or imaginary things in creation or conceived in the mind, which they regard to be also ‘Divine’ and directing to it, as object of their worship (MA’BUD).”All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  20. 20. The term “ “ pronounce ‘SHIRK’ – means “partner; associate; one who shares; etc.” Therefore in Islam we refer this to the sin of : “associating or ascribing to Allah others, as partners .” As previous said, the sin of "SHIRK “ is in the ‘ belief ’ and not merely the ‘outward action.’ It is only “SHIRK” when a person:All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  21. 21. [1] a person who, in his belief regards other being or entity in creation, to be also ‘Divine’; or [2] the belief that these other in creation have a share in ‘Divinity’ with Allah in His exclusive aspects; in His exclusive attributes; or [3] to regard these as being independent of Allah. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  22. 22. Note: It is indeed true when a learned scholar said : “ SHIRK “ is an intellectual sin.” Just like TAUHEED, it deals primarily with ‘thoughts or cognition’; i.e. what a person ‘knows and believes’ regarding God or the ‘Divine’ .All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  23. 23. Note: A person’s belief may generally be presumed, to be adhering to the creed which he professes to follow. Thus, unlike non-Muslims, all Muslims are to be regarded as a “MUWAAHEED”, (those upholding TAUHEED) unless clearly proven to be otherwise. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  24. 24. Note: In our learning about what constitute “SHIRK”, we are to learn the issue well first, so as to be able correct our own understanding – our own AQEEDAH (Belief). Therefore be forwarned: Do not be hasty to use it in judging other Muslims, as this involve ‘beliefs ’ or of peoples’ understanding which is in their hearts/mind - and therefore avoid from engaging in arguments with other fellow Muslims. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  25. 25. Traditionally, it is divided into 2 major categories: [1] SHIRK AL-’AZEEM (AKBAR) “Greater shirk” – an obvious, clear-cut association; the belief in other ‘deities’ , or supernatural force, or beings etc. apart from Allah, believed to be possessing divine powers, or regarded to be independent of Allah. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  26. 26. Traditionally, it is divided into 2 major categories: [2] SHIRK AL-ASHGHAR or KHAFIY “Lesser (small) Shirk” or “Hidden” – it pertains to what a Muslim’s objective, focus or intended reason behind his/her acts of devotional worship, sacrifice, vows, etc. – i.e. what may affect his original intention formulated which, in ‘IBAADAH, it must be ‘sincerely done for Allah’s sake alone.’ (IKHLASw). Example, specifically: ‘Doing or not doing ‘IBADAH only to be seen by people – i.e. showing off, or ostentation -(RIYA’ )All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

Thus, do not invoke (DU’A * ), side by side with Allah, anything that can neither benefit thee nor harm thee: for, behold, if thou do it, thou wilt surely be among the evildoers!” (Qur’an : Yunus: : 10: 105-106) * Meaning supplication as in ‘IBADAHAll Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  39. 39. ALLAH’S WARNING REGARDING VARIOUS TYPES OF ‘SHIRK AL-AKBAR’ “Now if they embark on a boat, they call on Allah (make Du’a), making their devotion sincerely (and exclusively) to Him; but when He had delivered them safely to (dry) land, behold , they give a share (of their worship to others)!” (Qur’an: Ankabut: 29: 65)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  41. 41. ALLAH’S WARNING REGARDING VARIOUS TYPES OF ‘SHIRK AL-AKBAR’ “He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so (FAD-’UUHU *) call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon (TAD-’UUNA *) besides Allah once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds.” * Meaning supplication as in ‘IBADAH (Qur’an: Ghafir: 40: 65-66)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  44. 44. Thus these are as in the following: Shirk – setting up of other independent entities as partners to Allah, as what is done by the pagan idol worshippers. This could be in their believing in that Allah SWT as having partnership in matters of exclusive : [1] Creatorship (KHALIQQIYYAH) [2] Lordship [RUB-BUBIYYAH] Even, by acknowledging a rivalry to Allah – as in some culture who blasphemously places Satan on this pedestal; or the Ahura Mazda versus Angra Mainyu (Good vs Evil) of the Zoroastrian belief; etc.All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  45. 45. Thus these are as in the following: Shirk – of attributing falsehood to concept of Divinity [ ULUHIYYAH] - as though ‘Godhead’ can be divisible with their false notion of it being Triune (as in Christian’s doctrine); or believing in the reincarnation or in-dwelling (HULUL /ITTIHAD) of God in creation. Shirk – attributing Allah with anthropomorphism, conceiving Him as having forms, attributing to Him similarity to creation or imputing imperfection, as limited by space, time etc. [ SIFAAT - WA - ASMA’]All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  46. 46. Thus these are as in the following: Shirk - setting up intermediaries and directing worship to it, alleging that they have divine authority to gaining nearness to Allah SWT. Shirk – exclusive obedience (TA’AT) to others besides Allah SWT alone. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  47. 47. Thus these are as in the following: Shirk – blindly imitating others, participating in their worship of their MA’BUD (object or entities of which they direct their worship to). This includes indulging or believing in any of their superstitious practices example : of using talisman, luck, charms, amulets, fortune-telling, astrology, horoscope, making offerings or honouring, invoking, (DU’A) supplicating to their MA’BUDAT – whether for appeasement to cast- off ‘bad-luck’ or seeking cure, or even mere acknowledging them – which when related to their belief or their religion, this clear contradict or is opposed to TAUHEED.All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  49. 49. “Whoever comes to (consult) a ‘ARAFAN (shaman, medium), or a SAAHIR (practitioner of magic, sorcery, occult etc.), or a KAAHIN (fortune-teller), and then he believes in whatever they say, this would make him a KAAFIR (disbeliever, rejecter, denier) of what has been revealed to Muhammad (salutations of Allah and peace be upon him and his household).” (Hadith reported by Tabarani)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  51. 51. “Whosoever changes mind in carrying out his needs (plans or endeavor ) because of the TwIYARAH (prediction or premonitions of calamity or misfortune by medium, fortune-teller, horoscope etc.) then he has committed SHIRK to Allah.” Then he was asked : ‘How do we to eradicate (cover or reject) this (superstitious inclination)?’ He s.a.w. replied: “Say: ALLAA-HUM-MA - LAA KHOI-RA - IL-LAA KHOI- RUK, WA - LAA TWAI-RA - IL-LAA - TWAI-RUK, WA – LAA –ILAA - HA GHOY-RUK – O Allah! There is no goodness except goodness from You, and there is no misfortune except it is from You, and there is no other god except You.” (Hadith reported by Ahmad)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  53. 53. Buraidah r.a. narrated that Ibnu ‘Umar r.a. heard someone swearing (an oath) : ‘By Ka’abah! No (I did not do it).’ Whereupon Ibnu ‘Umar said: “Do not swear by (using any names) other than (the names of) Allah, because I have heard our Prophet s.a.a.w. said: ‘Whosoever swears (an oath) by (using a name) other than Allah’s (name), he has committed KUFR or SHIRK’. (Hadith reported by Tirmidzi, Ibnu Hibban and Hakim)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  54. 54. Thus these are as in the following: Shirk – in believing that the natural causes (ASBAB), as being absolute and independent of Allah’s control. Shirk – in doing specific religious devotions (‘IBADAH KHUSUSIYAH) which are to be done solely (sincerely) for Allah SWT – viz. Swolah, fasting, vows (NADZAR), pilgrimage, Du’a, animal sacrifice, etc. but instead done for other purposes e.g. RIYA’, NIFAQ – or done with sinister motive of fulfilling a condition in doing SIHIR (magic / sorcery). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

  56. 56. “Have you ever considered (the kind of man) who makes his own desires as his deities (ILAAHA-HU)? Could you then (O Prophet) be held responsible for them?” (Qur’an: Furqan: 25: 43)All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
