It was named after its first Imam, Haji Ma'aruf, a pious Javanese man. When he died, Shaykh Muhammad bin 'Abdullah as- Suhaimi became the Imam and taught his students, consisting mainly of Javanese Muslims, there. He also taught there everyday in the morning and after 'Asr. Among the books he taught were the Tafsir al-Jalalain, the Fath al-Qarib of Imam Ibn Qasim al-Ghazzi, the Fath al-Mu'in of Imam Zain al-Din al-Malibari, the Minhaj al-Qawim of Imam Ibn Hajar al- Haytami, the Salalim al-Fudala (sharh of Imam Zain al-Din al-Malibari's Hidayat al-Adhkiya' ila Tariq al-Awliya') of Shaykh Nawawi al-Jawi, his own books and many more.
