Inertia 1

  1. 1. What is inertia? <ul><li>By definition, inertia is the natural tendency of an object to remain at rest or in motion at a constant speed along a straight line. </li></ul>
  2. 2. MORE <ul><ul><li>The bigger the mass, the larger the inertia and the harder it is to initiate the movement of the object (there is a direct relationship). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The smaller the mass, the smaller the inertia and the easier it is to initiate the movement of the object. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The mass of an object is a quantitative measure. </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Some examples of inertia: <ul><li>An elephant at rest has more inertia than a mouse that is in motion </li></ul><ul><li>A 500 pound man has more inertia when he is sitting down than a small child has when she is running </li></ul>
  4. 4. The First Law of Motion (or Law of Inertia) <ul><li>An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion UNLESS acted upon by an unbalanced force. </li></ul><ul><li>OR if Fnet=0, then a=0 and v=constant </li></ul>
  5. 5. Some examples of the First Law of Motion <ul><li>A cart holding a physics student is pushed at a constant speed </li></ul><ul><li>A ball does not and will not move, until a girl picks it up and throws it </li></ul>
  6. 6. Net Force <ul><li>If the net force acting on the object is zero, the object will continue moving in a straight line </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex: If an airplane is moving at constant speed , then the net force equals to zero. </li></ul></ul>
