### Inertia 1

1. 1. What is inertia?

By definition, inertia is the natural tendency of an object to remain at rest or in motion at a constant speed along a straight line.

2. 2. MORE

The bigger the mass, the larger the inertia and the harder it is to initiate the movement of the object (there is a direct relationship).

The smaller the mass, the smaller the inertia and the easier it is to initiate the movement of the object.

The mass of an object is a quantitative measure.

3. 3. Some examples of inertia:

An elephant at rest has more inertia than a mouse that is in motion

A 500 pound man has more inertia when he is sitting down than a small child has when she is running

4. 4. The First Law of Motion (or Law of Inertia)

An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion UNLESS acted upon by an unbalanced force.

OR if Fnet=0, then a=0 and v=constant

5. 5. Some examples of the First Law of Motion

A cart holding a physics student is pushed at a constant speed

A ball does not and will not move, until a girl picks it up and throws it

6. 6. Net Force

If the net force acting on the object is zero, the object will continue moving in a straight line

Ex: If an airplane is moving at constant speed , then the net force equals to zero.
