  1. 1. VIDEO LINK = https://youtu.be/q74ORyVNrD8 Find 15 Differencies Between Honeybee & Mason Bee: 29.04.2015 Kiev Ukraine. Welcome to see 15 differencies between honey bee, Apis mellifera (Apidae), and wild Mason bee, Osmia sp. (mason bees, or leaf- cutting bees of the family Megachilidae): 1. Short proboscis of Apis mellifera. 2. Longer proposcis of Osmia (to collect nectar and to feed on). 3. Black-brown cloration of hairy body of Osmia. 4. No corbicula, or pollen basket, on hind legs of Osmia. 5. Osmia has pollen-carrying structure (called a scopa) which is restricted to the ventral surface of the abdomen. It's collecting pollen on hairy sternites of the abdomen. 6. Apis mellifera has not too hairy abdomen, with well visible tergites. 7. Two black horn on frons of the head of Osmia. 8. Extremely hairy body of Osmia. 9. Black coloration ofhead and body, and red coloration of abdomen of Osmia.
  2. 2. 10. Male of Osmia has long antennae. 11. Male of Osmia has two horns of male genitalia (brown coloration) on the top of abdomen. 12. Both species feed on nectar and pollen but Apis mellifera produces honey to overwinter as a honey bee colony. Osmia bees produce neither honey nor beeswax. 13. Osmia sp. is solitary bee, it is not forming colony like Apis. Every female is fertile and makes her own nest, and there are no worker bees for these species. 14. Osmia sp. lives in hollow stems, like to nest in narrow holes or tubes (tubular cavities), but Apis lives in a beehives or honeybee nests in a hollow tree (feral bees). 15. Apis, honey bees can heavily sting, but Osmia bees will only sting if squeezed or stepped on. Apis bee will die after sting. Osmia doesn't die after sting. 16. More? Wild Mason Bee Osmia sp. and honey bee, Apis mellifera, were collected on Cherry Flowers at Maidan, or Independence Square, in the center of the city of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. 29.04.2015 Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.
