  2. Scarlet fever: Infectious illness caused by a group A Streptococcus bacterium that affects the lower respiratory system. Develops from strep throat. Also known as a “Scarlatina”.
  3. Etiology: Agent: Streptococcus pyogenese Gram staining:Postive (+) Endospores: none Toxins: Streptolysin O, Streptolysin S. Aerobic Non motile.
  4. Epidemiology: • Lasted a period of 42 weeks • Reported more than 54,000 cases of scarlet fever in 2022. Out break: • 5-12 years old children • Late winter • Early summer Most commonly seen on:
  5. Pathophysiology: As the name “scarlet fever” implies, an erythematous eruption is associated with a febrile illness. The circulating toxin, produced by GABHS and often referred to as erythemogenic or erythrogenic toxin, causes the pathognomonic rash as a consequence of local production of inflammatory mediators and alteration of the cutaneous cytokine milieu. This results in a sparse inflammatory response and dilatation of blood vessels, leading to the characteristic scarlet color of the rash
  6. Transmission: Direct contact mucous from nose Infected saliva Fluid from nose

Clinical manifestation/ Symptoms: • Begins with a rash that shows red bumps • The rash lasts about 2-7 days • After the rash is gone the skin of the tip of the fingers and toes peel • A flush face with a pale area around the face. • Fever of 101 degree or higher. • A red and sore throat that can have white or yellow patches. • Swollen glands in the neck.
  8. Diagnostics: Check for the rash 1 Swab the back of the throat 2 Check the tongue and tonsils 3
  9. Treatment: Use of antibiotics such as: • Penicillin • Erythromycin • Ibuprofen for symptom relief Avoid the use of Aspirin in children younger than 16.
  10. Prevention: There's currently no vaccine for scarlet fever. Children with scarlet fever should stay at home 24 after starting antibiotics. Avoid sharing Eating utensils Towels And other personal items. Wash your hands often
