International relations? <ul><li>International relations involve ties among many countries and groupings throughout the world. In international relations, the UN plays an important role as an organization representing all countries in the world . </li></ul>
Si ngapore was admitted as the 117th UN member and this allowed Singapore to gain recognition as a sovereign state. The UN helped Singapore by sending experts to advise and help in the economic and social development of the country. Due to the help Singapore received from the UN, the independence and development of Singapore grew. Singapore and the UN
Singapore was elected by the UN General Assembly to serve as a non-permanent Security Council member. Its main role is to maintain international peace and security. Singapore served as as the President of the Council and this election showed the confidence member countries have in Singapore as well as Singapore's commitment to the UN, and this is beneficial for Singapore. UN Law of the Sea Conference <ul><li>The law defines how countries can draw territorial borders in the sea and it limits the rights of landlocked states, which are countries with no coast. It provides guidelines protect the freedom of scientific research on high seas as well as how to safeguard the marine environment. Singapore did play an important role in the UN Law of the Sea Conference. It was organised to decide on the territorial rights of a country over its waters. </li></ul>
Explanation of the benefits of International Relations <ul><li>"Membership in the UN approves the sovereignty and independence of the small states and thereby indirectly contributes to their independence and territorial integrity. The UN also enables a small country to develop friendship with other nations, monitor world trends and collect valuable information.” </li></ul><ul><li>-- A political scientist's view on the importance of the UN </li></ul>This proves that the UN did help many different countries from all over the world to bond. And with this bond comes friendship which will slowly develop further. Basically, the goal of the UN, which is to preserve world peace and prevent another major war, is met. And harmony between countries is very important as this will prevent international conflicts from happening.
Reflections. <ul><li>Although bilateral relations benefits Singapore by allowing Singapore to acquire advanced technological skills from developed countries such as USA and Germany etc, and regional relations strengthens Singapore, making it stronger and be in a better position when dealing with other countries or association, however international relations is still more beneficial in a long run as it enables Singapore to develop friendship with other nations, monitor world trends and collect valuable information. </li></ul>
The UN has played a major role in managing international crises and resolving conflicts between countries and within countries. It has undertaken complex operations involving peacemaking, peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance. Peacekeeping is a good way to help countries torn by conflict to create conditions for long-term peace.
