Stages of Development
1. 1. FirstStage
Infancy or the oral-sensory stage-this is the first stage of development, being the
first year and a half of human life. The psychosocial factors are also highlighted in
this stage as during this stage, an infant has a crucial relationship with its mother.
Also during this stage an infant, if given consistencyand continuity, will grow and
develop trusting of the world and its body. On the other hand, if an infant’s parents
are unreliable the infant will grow and develop mistrust towards people and the
world.
2. Second stage
Anal-muscular stage- for example if mom and dad permit the child to
explore and manipulate his or her environment, the child will
develop a sense of independence. The parents should not
discourage the child, but neither should they push. A balance
is required, so people often advise new parents to be "firm but
tolerant" at this stage, this way the child will develop both self-
control and self-esteem.
2. 3. Third Stage
Genital-locomotor stage or play age – At this stage children are encouraged
to try out new ideas, take on responsibilities and learning new skills.
4. Fourth stage
Latency stage- During this stage we are more capable of learning, creating
and accomplishing numerous skills and knowledge.
5. Fifth stage
Adolescence- at this stage Adolescences must struggle to discover and fine
his/her own identity, while struggling with social interactions and fitting in,
and developing a sense of right from wrong.
6. Sixth stage
Young Adulthood- at this stage persons would have a clear sense of who
they are and tend to seek deep intimacy and satisfying relationships, but if
unsuccessful, isolation may occur.
3. 7. Seventh stage
Middle Adulthood- career and work are the most important things at this stage,
along with family.
8. Eight stage
Late Adulthood- this stage involves reflections, being able to look back with
integrity and that is contentment and fulfilment, having led a meaningful life
and valuable contribution to society. Others may have a sense of despair
during this stage, reflection upon their failures.
