An -esthesia 麻醉 <ul><li>The anesthetic qualities of nitrous oxide (isolated in 1773 by Joseph Priestley) were discovered by the British chemist Humphry Davy about 1799, and reported in a paper in 1800. But initially the medical uses of this so-called &quot;laughing gas&quot; were limited - its main role was in entertainment. </li></ul><ul><li>It was used on 30 September 1846 for painless tooth extraction upon patient Eben Frost by American dentist William Thomas Green Morton. Horace Wells of Connecticut, a traveling dentist, had demonstrated it the previous year 1845 at Massachusetts General Hospital. </li></ul>

  11. 11. <ul><li>The active extract of the bark, called salicin, after the Latin name for the white willow (Salix alba), was isolated in crystalline form in 1828 by Henri Leroux, a French pharmacist, and Raffaele Piria, an Italian chemist. Salicylic acid was also isolated from the herb meadowsweet by German researchers in 1839. While their extract was somewhat effective, it also caused digestive problems such as gastric irritation, bleeding, diarrhea etc when consumed in high doses. </li></ul>Salicylico- 水杨酸

  13. 13. Ergot 麦角 <ul><li>Ergot is the common name of a fungus in the genus Claviceps that is parasitic on certain grains. The fungus forms a sclerotium in winter, and this small structure is what is usually referred to as ‘ergot’. </li></ul><ul><li>The ergot sclerotium contains alkaloid ergotamine. Ergot alkaloids have a wide range of biological activities including effects on circulation and neurotransmission. Ergotism is the name for sometimes severe pathological syndromes . The common name for ergotism is &quot;St. Anthony's Fire&quot;, in reference to the symptoms, such as severe burning sensations in the limbs. </li></ul>

Hormones produced by this organ stimulate the production of certain infection-fighting cells. It is of central importance in the maturation of T cells. </li></ul>

Citric acid was first isolated in 1784 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who crystallized it from lemon juice. As a food additive, citric acid is used as a flavouring and preservative in food and beverages, especially soft drinks. Citric acid's ability to chelate metals makes it useful in soaps and laundry detergents. Citric acid is used in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry to passivate high purity process. </li></ul>
