Racialicious is a course that focuses on a relatively new and evolving area of feminist scholarship called girls’ studies. The category of “girl” can mean many different things—there is no one representation. Girls come in all shapes and sizes and from many backgrounds. Although girls all share the experience of being gendered, other elements combine in their lives, such as ethnicity, class, and race. This course provides an overview of girls’ studies and moves into a new area focusing on the intersection of race, class, gender, and sexuality issues by specifically examining the relationship between girls and popular culture with an interdisciplinary perspective.
