Population: 14 million (approx)
Majority is culturally Bengali, but people
from all parts of India live here
Similarly, the majority religion is Hindu, but
Muslims, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs,
Jains, Buddhists all coexist peacefully

Annual festival – in October – celebrating the Goddess Durga, and the
victory of good over evil.
Became popular in Calcutta when the independence movement adopted
Durga as a symbol of nationalism, to defeat the British Empire.
