Paradise research pp

  1. 1. This is a medium shot of a elephant behind bars.In this image you can see that there is someone ina animal costume. In our music video we wouldlike to use this as intertexual reference as wewould like our character ”the ladies man” in aanimal costume. This video is clearly a concept based video. I wouldlike to make my music video a concept based videoand this is why I think using intertextual referencesfrom this particular video would be good as ourmusic video will also be contradicting like thismusic video, as we will have our character in a lioncostume suggesting to the audience that he isfierce and tough like a lion. However at the end ofthe video he will get beaten up by a girl whichcontradicts his image. In this scene the lighting is bright, this tells us thatits daylight. The colors used are all very natural colors possiblybecause theres an animal and they are trying toshow wildlife. I think in this video the relationship between themusic and visuals is contradicting because theysing about paradise but then we are shown aperson in an animal costume behind bars which isclearly not paradise. This signifies escapism and implies to the audiencethat the elephant is trapped. This image could also be suggesting that theelephant is imprisoned behind the bars and notable to reach paradise.
  2. 2. In this close-up shot we are shown that the elephant is picking up a stone. This is a signifier as thissuggests to the audience that this is what he will be using to escape. There is also action matchediting because the audience are first shown him picking up the stone, which is what he uses toescape. They are then shown that he has escaped.I think that this may fit in with Barthes theory of action codes as he picks up the stone and thenphysically uses this to escape.
  3. 3. In this image we are shown a long shot. This animages denotes that the elephant is running andthat there are two police men behind him. Thisimplies to the audience that he is being chasedby the two policemen, possibly because he hasdone something which is against the law and isin trouble. This may be the reason why he wastrapped behind the bars. This is a point of view shot, the director has used Goodwins theory of voyeurism. For example the elephant is looking at the underground station sign. This signifies to the audience that the elephant wants to use the underground to get somewhere. ‘notion of looking. The director has also used Saussures theory of signs and signifiers to give the audience hints on what the elephant is trying to do.
  4. 4. This image is a medium shot of theelephant holding a piece of cardboardwith writing on it. This could be explainedusing Barthes theory of codes. In this partof the music video the director has usedthe written code as this piece of writingeither tells the audience what is going tohappen or gives the audience some sortof information. This image shows the audience a lowangle shot of the elephant looking uptowards the escalator. This could besuggesting that this is his way to freedom. The director could also be implying thatthe elephant is looking up at the rest ofthe world because he feels that his statusis lower than the people going up on theescalator.
  5. 5. In the first image the director has shownthe elephant looking at something. Weare then shown what he is looking at. Thisis called an eye line match. This eye linematch connotes to the audience that theelephant knows where he wants to get to.It clearly signifies to the audience that hewants to get to Heathrow airport. Thisparticular part in the music video fits inwith Saussures theory of signs andsignifiers, because it is signified to theaudience that he wants to get toHeathrow airport to escape, get hisfreedom and possibly find paradise.
