  5. 5. Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smart phones initially developed by Android, Inc. Android is open source and Google releases the code under the ApacheLicense. This open source code and permissive licensing allows the software to befreely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers andenthusiast developers. Android has a growing selection of third party applications, which can beacquired by users either through an app store such as Google Play.   6. 6. •Windows Phone is a family of proprietary mobileoperating systems developed by Microsoft, and isthe successor to its Windows Mobile platform.•It was first launched in October 2010, with arelease in Asia following in early 2011.•The latest release of Windows Phone is WindowsPhone 8, which has been available to consumerssince October 29, 2012.•Partnership with nokia :•On February 11, 2011, at a press event in London,Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Nokia CEOStephen Elop announced a partnership betweentheir companies in which Windows Phone wouldbecome the primary Smartphone operating systemfor Nokia.

Originally released in 2007 for the iPhone and iPodTouch, it has been extended to support other Apple devicessuch as the iPad and Apple TV. Apple does not license iOS forinstallation on non-Apple hardware. As of September 12, 2012,Apples App Store contained more than 700,000 iOSapplications, which have collectively been downloaded morethan 30 billion times. It had a 14.9% share of the smartphonemobile operating system units shipped in the third quarter of2012, behind only Googles Android.In June 2012, it accountedfor 65% of mobile web data consumption (including use onboth the iPod Touch and the iPad).At the half of 2012, therewere 410 million devices activated.According to the specialmedia event held by Apple on September 12, 2012, 400 milliondevices have been sold through June 2012.
  8. 8. BlackBerry OS is a proprietary mobile operating system developed byResearch In Motion (RIM) for its BlackBerry line of smartphonehandheld devices. The operating system provides multitasking andsupports specialized input devices that have been adopted by RIM foruse in its handhelds, particularly the trackwheel, trackball, and mostrecently, the trackpad and touchscreen.It is even most famous for the blackberry messenger. BlackBerryMessenger (BBM) is a proprietary Internet-based instant messengerapplication included on BlackBerry devices that allows messagingbetween BlackBerry users. It was developed by the manufacturer ofthe BlackBerry, Research In Motion (RIM). Messages sent viaBlackBerry Messenger are sent over the Internet and use theBlackBerry PIN system, so communication is only possible betweenBlackBerry devices.

Symbian wasoriginally developed by Symbian Ltd., asdescendant of Psions EPOC and runsexclusively on ARM processors, althoughan unreleased x86 port existed.
