Essay Writing
An Essay is a combination of a few meaningful paragraphs around a
particular topic or theme.
Structure of an essay:
An essay should have a minimum of four to five paragraphs and a maximum
10-15 paragraphs (No upper limit for maximum)
Introduction
Introductory paragraphs present the main or central
idea/concept/theme of the topic.
It conveys the main idea in the form of a thesis statement.
What is thesis statement:
A thesis statement is the gist/summary of the entire essay.
Thesis statement can appear either in the first, second, or third
sentence of an introducing paragraph.
Only one sentence is a thesis statement out of 5-7 sentences of an
introductory paragraphs.
Thesis statement contains key words/key terms which will be further
explained in the subsequent paragraphs.
Main Body
The introductory paragraph gives on a linking thread.
IP: Introductory paragraph
BP: Body Paragraph-1,2,3
CP: Concluding Paragraph
IP BP-1 BP-2 BP-3 CP
Concluding Paragraph
It is the third part of an essay.
It restates the thesis statement in different words. May not be in same words.
It presents the gist or summary of the entire essay.
It also include concluding remarks.
It has personal voice of the writer.
It can have 3-5 sentences.
