3 D Ethan Lee, Deforestation

 1. 1. Deforestation By Ethan Lee (3D)
 2. 2. Contents

Introduction

Effects of Deforestation

Koalas

Chimpanzees

Orang Utans

How can we help?

How I can help?

Sources of information

 3. 3. Introduction

What is Deforestation?

Deforestation is clearing Earth's forests on a massive scale, often resulting in damage to the quality of the land.

Examples of clearing a forest includes

Logging

Burning

Slash and Burn agricultural methods

Overgrazing by animals

Wildfires/bushfires (natural, unintentional)

 4. 4. Effects of Deforestation

Deforestation affects

Humans (Burning causes haze which affects our breathing)

Climate (Global warming)

Animals (Loss of habitat for species and eventually leading to extinction)

Increase tropical diseases

 5. 5. Koalas

Koalas live in Eucalyptus forests. Eucalyptus can be made into very

fine paper and hence the demand for eucalyptus trees. Deforestation causes their food loss and habitat loss. In Australia, Koalas are big business for tourism. Losing them may mean losing tourism and hence the economy.

 6. 6. Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees live in tropical forest. Deforestation

affects them by depleting their food sources and loss of habitat. Chimps share a 98% similarity to Human’s DNA. Losing them may mean that we will lose valuable knowledge related to mankind and medicinal cures that comes from research in chimps.

 7. 7. Orang Utans

Orang Utans live in tropical forest and deforestation again affects their food and habitat. If Orang Utans disappear, the ecology in the area will have serious consequences. Predators will find their prey missing and this can affect the entire food chain.

 8. 8. How can we help?

Implement Sustainable-logging regimes .

Have Campaigns that educate people about the destruction caused by deforestation.

Encouraging people who live near rain forests to harvest its bounty (nuts, fruits, medicines) rather than clear-cutting it for farmland.

Government regulate on road building and large infrastructure projects in the rain forest.

 9. 9. How I will help?

Reduce, reuse and recycle paper products

Less demand for paper (use both sides of the paper, print less)

Buying products that come from sustainable agriculture farms/ countries

 10. 10. Sources of information

Animals under threat Koala by Carol Inskipp ( NLB 599.2 INS)

Animals under threat OrangUtan by David Orme ( NLB 599.88 ORM)

Chimpanzees by Dan Greenberg ( NLB 599.885 GRE)

Deforestation and Rainforest Threats - National geographic -http://green.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/deforestation-overview.html

Rainforest facts - http://www.rain-tree.com/facts.htm
