  2. 3. Acid formed through NO x <ul><li>N 2 (g) + O 2 (g) = 2NO (g) </li></ul><ul><li>2NO (g) + O2 (g) = 2NO 2 (g) </li></ul><ul><li>2NO 2 (g) + H 2 O (l) = HNO 3 (aq) + HNO 2 (aq) </li></ul><ul><li>Or 4NO 2 (g) + O2 (g) + 2H 2 O (l) = 4HNO 3 (aq) </li></ul>

Acid Deposition <ul><ul><li>Acid deposition is caused by the oxidation of NO x and SO 2 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The mechanism responsible for transforming the NO x and SO 2 involve hydroxyl free radicals (OH˙) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These are formed either through the reaction of the ozone with water vapor or when water vapor combines with oxygen free radicals when ozone decomposes </li></ul></ul>
  5. 6. <ul><li>In other words: </li></ul><ul><li>HO radicals form through the following reactions: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>H 2 O (g) + O 3 (g) = 2HO˙ (g) + O 2 (aq) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>H 2 O (g) + O˙ (g) = 2HO˙ (g) </li></ul></ul>

The role of ammonia in acid deposition <ul><li>Ammonia is naturally present in the soil through the work of bacteria who may be found roots of some vegetables. </li></ul><ul><li>The atmosphere also contains ammonia naturally </li></ul><ul><li>Ammonia present in the atmosphere neutralize some of the acid present in it, and form (NH 4 ) 2 NO 3 and NH 4 NO 3 . </li></ul>
