  2. 2. Constellations <ul><li>Stars formed together to make a shape, person or any other figure </li></ul><ul><li>Helps divide the sky into bits </li></ul><ul><li>Makes it easier to find stars and planets </li></ul>
  3. 3. Constellations <ul><li>Total of eighty-eight constellations </li></ul><ul><li>Greeks named and recognized 48 of the known constellations; Tolomeo a Greek mathematician and astronomer described 48 of them </li></ul>
  4. 4. Constellation: Names <ul><li>Named according to what they looked like in the sky </li></ul><ul><li>Names were translated into Latin </li></ul><ul><li>Latin was called the language of learning </li></ul><ul><li>Names given by the Greeks and Egyptians </li></ul>

Constellation: Meanings <ul><li>Each constellation refers to mythological and/or legendary men, women and animals </li></ul><ul><li>Were also seen by Arabs, Egyptians, and Babylonians </li></ul><ul><li>Meanings related with historical-like times, people, figures, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>1928 International Astronomy Union solidified boundaries for all 88 constellations </li></ul>

Hercules: In Greek… <ul><li>Named after Hercules, the Roman mythological hero </li></ul><ul><li>Adopted from the Greek Heracles </li></ul><ul><li>Hercules was a great warrior in Greek mythology </li></ul><ul><li>Constellations such as Leo , Draco , the dragon, Cancer , plus others were defeated by him (placed in the sky to honor his victories) </li></ul>
