Economic cooperation & assistance <ul><li>This project offers a five-year aid package of over $80 million to selected member countries between 2000 and 2003. </li></ul>Senior Ministor Goh Chok Tong launched an Initiative for ASEAN Integration project in 2000. This is to narrow the economic gap between countries in ASEAN.
Environment Collaboration <ul><li>1997 : Forest fires in Indonesia created a serious haze problem in the region. </li></ul>To help Indonesia tackle the haze problem, Singapore had assisted Indonesia in the monitoring of forest fires through the use of satellite images.
Benefits to spore <ul><li>By combining the strengths of member countries in a region, the association becomes stronger, therefore, be in a better position when dealing with other countries or associations. </li></ul><ul><li>ASEAN has enabled Singapore to forge better relations with its neighboring countries. </li></ul><ul><li>It provides an avenue for Singapore to discuss their differences with neighboring countries peacefully. </li></ul><ul><li>It also allows countries to manage environmental issues such as the haze problem through peaceful dialogue. </li></ul><ul><li>ASEAN has provided Singapore with many opportunities to strengthen its relationship with its neighbors. </li></ul><ul><li>It has given Singapore a role to play in maintaining regional peace and promoting economic development. </li></ul>
Why is it more important <ul><li>Bilateral relations focus on economic and social development while United Nations focus mostly on operations involving military duties to undertake complex operations involving peacemaking, peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance. </li></ul><ul><li>As Singapore is a small country, we have a much smaller population compared to other countries, we may not have enough people to help out in military duties that the United Nations had organized. </li></ul><ul><li>Maintaining regional peace and promoting economic development is more important than promoting political, economic and cultural ties with neighboring countries (bilateral relations) as it allows Singapore to interact smoothly with many other countries besides its surrounding neighbors. </li></ul><ul><li>At the same time, maintaining peace is necessary to prevent another world war. </li></ul>
