The play Rabbit Hole follows Becca and Howie as they grieve the death of their young son Danny in a car accident. In the beginning, Becca wants to forget all memories of Danny while Howie wants to hold onto them. This causes conflict between the couple. Later, Jason, the driver who accidentally hit Danny, visits them to apologize which upsets Howie. By the end of the play, Becca decides to reconnect with friends and moves forward intimately with Howie, showing she has accepted Danny's death and is ready to continue living.
2. Exposition The setting of the play is in Larchmont, New York, present time The main characters are Becca, Izzy, Howie, Jason and Nat The protagonist is Becca. Becca and her husband Howie are both grieving the death of their four year old son Danny The event that occurs before the inciting incident is when Becca, Howieand Becca’s mother Nat are at Becca’s sister, Izzy, birthday party and everyone starts fighting about their family problems.
3. Inciting Incident After everyone leaves Howie and Becca’s home, Becca and Howie get into a serious argument on whether or not Becca recorded over their only video of their son. Howie also brings up how Becca is trying to erase all the memories they have of their son by not keeping photos of him and wanting to sell their house.
4. Conflict In the first Act of the play the conflict is about how Howie feels Becca is trying to forget about their son’s death. Howie tells Becca that she needs to go to group therapy and talk with other couples who can relate to them. Becca refuses to go and doesn’t believe counseling will help at all.
5. Rising Action Howie wants to try and save his marriage so he sets up an open house to try and please Becca Izzy then accuses Howie of cheathing on Becca with another woman in their therapy group, but Howie denies it and explains they were just talking
6. Climax Jason, who was the person who ran over Howie and Becca’s son with his car and killed him, visited their house and wants to talk to them about the accident Howie explains to him that he has to come back another time since they have company over A few days later Jason stops by again and talks to Becca, since Howie’s not home. He apologizes to Becca about the accident and tells her he was going over the speed limit He also tells her he wrote a short story for his school newspaper in Danny’s memory Becca and Jason continue to talk about parallel universes and rabbit holes and how out there in space there are different versions of everyone doing different things
7. Falling Action and Denoument In the next scene Becca tells Howie what Jason and her talked about. Howie then tells Becca he doesn’t want to go to counseling anymore because it wasn’t helping him After Becca tells Howie that she called her old friend Debbie whome she hasn’t talked to since the death of Danny. She invites them to a barbeque the following weekend Becca and Howie decide that they’re going to have sex after the barbeque, which is very special to them since they haven’t had sex since Danny died
8. Becca After reading the play I would say Becca is a dynamic character In the beginning of the story she is very unhappy about her son and all she wants really is to forget everything. By the end of the play she knows that life must go on with or without Danny and calls her friends whom she hasn’t spoken to and also decides to be intimate with her husband again In the play a lot is at stake for Becca. She is constantly fighting with her mother and husband, which could have destroyed their relationship. Becca went through a lot with losing her only son and was depressed for most of the play but through time she grew as a person and learned that life was still worth living
