  1. 1. February 2, 2009 Last week the House of Representatives passed a 819 billion economic stimulus package. Not one Republican voted for it. The news media thinks this is a problem. What do you think?

  3. 3. The Industrial Revolution <ul><li>A change from manual labor to mechanical labor </li></ul><ul><li>Affected manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation </li></ul><ul><li>Started in Great Britain </li></ul>
  4. 4. The Industrial Revolution <ul><li>There have been several Industrial Revolutions </li></ul><ul><li>The first involved adding steam power and using iron as a building material </li></ul>
  5. 5. Luddites <ul><li>Not everyone was in favor of the Industrial Revolution </li></ul><ul><li>Mechanization puts some people out of work </li></ul><ul><li>Some jobs no longer exist, while new ones are created </li></ul>
  6. 6. Steam Power <ul><li>First used to pump water out of mines </li></ul><ul><li>Then used to power textile mills </li></ul><ul><li>Textiles = cloth </li></ul><ul><li>Steam power allowed textiles to be made cheaper </li></ul>
  7. 7. COAL <ul><li>A kind of mineral </li></ul><ul><li>Very common in Pennsylvania </li></ul><ul><li>A better source of heat than coal </li></ul><ul><li>It was the main source of power for the Industrial Revolution </li></ul>
  8. 8. Factory <ul><li>A large building where workers come to make things </li></ul><ul><li>Instead of workers doing what they did at home, now they came to the work </li></ul><ul><li>Large buildings costing a lot of money </li></ul>
