After a very short lived Indian summer, Britain could be expecting sub-zero temperatures and violent snow storms due to hit. This could be as soon as late October, as a freak ocean cooling in the Atlantic threatens to trigger a historic nationwide whiteout.
Experts fear a repeat of the worst winter in history which temperatures dropped to below -20c in January 1963.

The first bird arrived on October 11th – the earliest date ever recorded. It coincided with the first frosts of the autumn and experts say that its early return could be a sign of a long, hard winter.
  5. 5. www.worldweatheronline.com Global warming Scientists say that part of the problem could be due to the melting Greenland ice caps allowing huge volumes of fresh water to flood into the North Atlantic. Fresh water floats on top of the ocean saltwater hindering the normal currents which are driven by a constant sinking of cold water to the ocean bed. This has slowed down the pace at which the Gulf Stream channels warm water from the Caribbean, up the coast of the US and to north Europe.

It also means that the emergency services risk being stretched to breaking point with harsh weather responsible for thousands of deaths.
