  2. 2. www.worldweatheronline.com The 2015 Atlantic hurricane season is a current event in the annual tropical cyclone season in the northern hemisphere. The season officially began on 1st June 2015 and will end on 30th November 2015. Danny originally formed on Tuesday 18th August 2015 as ‘Tropical Depression Four’ and then strengthened into a tropical storm later on that day. What’s this about?
  3. 3. www.worldweatheronline.com What does the report say? Danny then became a hurricane on Thursday 20th August 2015 and peaked as a Category 3 with maximum winds up to 115mph on the afternoon of Friday 21st August 2015. This made Danny the first major hurricane of the 2015 hurricane season.
  4. 4. www.worldweatheronline.com What happened? A “wall of wind” towards the Caribbean quickly weakened Hurricane Danny around Saturday 22nd August – Monday 24th August 2015. Wind shear can blow storm activity away from the centre of a tropical cyclone. In addition to this, the westerly winds transported more dry air into the circulation of Danny. The dry air is also stable, meaning that it suppresses vertical columns of air needed to maintain thunderstorms. All of this ended in Hurricane Danny’s demise.
  5. 5. www.worldweatheronline.com Real time Radar Images A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research plane sent back real time radar images from a hurricane for the first ever time. According to the NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division, Tropical Storm Marco in 2008 had gale force winds extending out only 12 miles from the centre whereas Danny’s storm winds extended up to an estimation of 60 miles from the centre.
