2. What’s this about?
A new study has suggested that some water molecules that
we shower with and drink, could be more than 4.6 billion
years old. To put in perspective, that is older than the Solar
System itself!

3. Water sure gets around…
Water is found throughout the
Solar System, not just on Earth
but even on comets and moons.
It has even been found included
in mineral samples from the
Moon and Mars.
Comets and asteroids, in
particular, provide an idea about
the conditions during the early
days of our Solar System.

The study
The study, led by L Illsedore Cleeves from the University of Michigan,
focused on the history of our Solar System. The team focused on
hydrogen and its heavier isotope deuterium.
The scientists used computer models designed to simulate the
evolution of a planetary system.
The models indicated that levels of deuterium now found in Earth’s
water are too high to have occurred after the formation of the sun.
5. Is there anybody out there?
As the study suggests that
since some of Earth’s water
came from interstellar space,
there may be water in other
planetary systems.
This possibility could affect the
study into extra-terrestrial life,
as the presence of water has
the ability to sustain life.
