  2. 2. www.worldweatheronline.com In 2010, 8 million tons of plastic ended up in the ocean, and each year the amount is increasing. This plastic has turned up all over the ocean, from being found in the deep sea to being buried in Arctic Ice. It has been ingested with dire consequences by some 700 species of marine wildlife. Last year the estimated amount of plastic floating on the ocean’s surface was 245,000 tons. What’s this about?
  3. 3. www.worldweatheronline.com What is responsible? China is ranked number 1 for generating the greatest amount of ocean-bound trash, with the US at 20th. The other top 20 countries include 11 other Asian countries, five African countries and Brazil.
  4. 4. www.worldweatheronline.com Garbage in the ocean Jambeck and her team combined population and economic data from 192 coastal countries. These countries create 275 million tons of garbage annually of which up to 12.7 million tons of plastic flowed into the oceans.
  5. 5. www.worldweatheronline.com Where is all the plastic? The gap between what is found floating and what flows into the ocean is so large, scientists now have to figure out where else it collects and in what amounts.
