Family <ul><li>He is married to Avadai Dhanam. </li></ul><ul><li>He has three sons, one daughter and five grandchildren. </li></ul><ul><li>His elder son was the senior editor of The Straits Times </li></ul><ul><li>His second son was the Vice president of the World Bank Group. </li></ul><ul><li>His third son was a private entrepreneur. </li></ul><ul><li>His daughter resides in Hamilton. </li></ul>

  4. 4. Career <ul><li>During World War II, Nair became a teacher. He taught schools like St Joseph’s Institution and St.Andrew’s school. </li></ul><ul><li>Became the general secretary of the Singapore Teacher’s Union in 1949. </li></ul><ul><li>Was the secretary Singapore factory and shopworkers’ Union. </li></ul>

Political Career <ul><li>Was a convener of the People’s Action Party in 1954 </li></ul><ul><li>Became the Political secretary to the Ministry Of Education in 1959. </li></ul><ul><li>He was the only PAP member to win the Malaysian general election. </li></ul><ul><li>He was involved a lot in parliamentary politics in Malaysia as he won a seat in the Bungsar constituency. </li></ul><ul><li>Became the third President of Singapore in 1979 . </li></ul>
  6. 6. Resignation <ul><li>Resigned from his position as President on 1985. Reasons are unclear but Lee Kuan Yew stated that Nair resigned to get treatment of alcoholism. </li></ul><ul><li>But Nair said that he resigned due to political pressure . </li></ul>
  7. 7. Death <ul><li>Nair died in Canada on December 6 2005 after the death of his wife on April 18 2005. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Conclusion <ul><li>Devan Nair was a bright person and was very successful. But he did not really have a lot of contributions that impacted Singapore a lot. He was not an important leader of Singapore like Lee Kuan Yew or Goh Keng Swee but he had minor contributions to Singapore like doing anti-British work for the PAP to help Singapore to freedom. </li></ul>
