Editor's Notes

  1. About me: why i’m here You: why are you sitting here, and how can I really convince you that giving up your saturday was actually worth it
  2. My goals today: opening up the light to a way of thinking that will make you the world’s best as future entrepreneurs (and even entrepreneurs of today) YOU JUST DONT’ KNOW IT YET Showing the possibilities, well executed examples of web technologies and lateral thinking Inspiring a world of inspiration about the world’s most pervasive, fastest growing technology
  3. studying, background, software company, technical experience
  4. why twitter? 1-800-got-junk - social PR = inspiration and if you don’t know what it is, google “twitter in plain english” and you’ll get a nice intro by commoncraft. we sought to make sense of Twitter. and how the bleep do you do that?
  5. best team ever. how i met them, how it was formed - how we kind of met - 1 MONTH
  6. talk about ranking and algorithm and improvements custom categories: canucks, fashion, cars, onlinemarketing, SEO
  7. 9:00am/tuesday: both most active times in the entire week
  8. - who here is 15, 16, 17 - who uses facebook - who uses twitter - who has an iphone - who has a smartphone - who owns their own business - who knows what they want to study in uni - why does infotech interest you
  9. Inventors, problem solvers, critical thinkers being “clever”: result of moving away from what may be “logical”
  10. Important distinctions we now focus on product
  11. are a product of lateral thinking connecting impossibilities
  12. are a product of lateral thinking connecting impossibilities
  13. Lee Iaccoca, former CEO of Chrysler (when it was doing well) fundamentally about an entrepreneur’s need to solve a problem. lateral thinking bridges connections that brings unique solutions to a problem previously thought insoluble
  14. we sought to take this approach on recurring themes: - against the grain, the status quo (challenge) - provoking new ways of consumption - seemingly random interdependencies and linkages of ideas (and concepts) - extracting fundamental concepts and re-applying (reapplication) - radical evolution successful product of lateral thinking is the following formula = combining two separate things + multi-faceted linkages (exploring different uses) + environmental disruption (what exists? what’s accepted?) to solve a problem
  15. successful product of lateral thinking is the following formula = combining two separate things + multi-faceted linkages (exploring different uses) + environmental disruption (what exists? what’s accepted?) but there needs to be a problem to present an opportunity = environmental disruption ultimately encompasses the initial problem (what does it disrupt to solve something, or attempt to solve it) iterative process and problems can change usually begins with the problem, but can cause its own problems to be solved (i know, mind blowing)
  16. Twitter = SMS and one-to-many communications (traditionally one to one), app ecosystem allows communications platforms to be integrated (unconventional applications) Digg = traditionally editorial news -> democratically chosen news -> democratically sourced news -> democratically chosen advertisements Spotify = music does not need to be stored Facebook =
  17. where would it fit = what problem would it solve?
  18. To make it web, add a web technology window blinds, alarm clock then, add bluetooth. or wifi Now make item 1 a technology hooked up or related to the web: real-time, sms, video streaming, social sharing, typing, clicking, dragging/moving, screenshots, attaching, audio, storage, wi-fi, bluetooth, usb, machine learning Now make item 2 something completely random, an object: kayak, surfboard, pen, teddy bear, combine item two an action: walking, talking, yelling, running, eating, throwing try to make possible combinations illogical, or purposefully unconventional iterative; try solving again with the new product you’ve created, with a new technology, or with a new combo (no set rules)

  21. GOOGLE WAVE INVITES FOR THE TEAM THAT WINS (4 people) notice how most of the examples that were immediately created were involved with technology or something related to technology and consumption of information
  22. where would it fit = what problem would it solve?
  23. if you’re interested in starting your own business, there’s a whole new world - i’m here to inspire and to spark if you want to talk about it more, give me a shout and i’d be happy to sit down with you
  24. the web’s not all about funny names it’s about continuing to use web technologies and thinking about them laterally to further consumption and cultural evolution your minds are hardwired to think in this way - you grew up with these technologies. keep yourself informed and aware of what’s available and what’s possible. to combine two things you need to know what they are first - and sometimes these two things may be right in front of your face. learn about other combinations to learn about possibilities, but not to copy. technology is ultimately about connections. and your generation is the most connected. is that is why you are the world’s best thinkers.
  25. you can add me to facebook too if you want
