Running Head: HIP-HOP AND FASHION

HIP-HOP AND FASHION
5
Topic: Hip-hop music is an integral aspect of setting fashion
trends across the world.
“Hip-hop” is a very complicated culture which traces its roots
way back when it was introduced. It is mostly associated to
African Americans since it is believed to have originated in the
late 1970’s.It was associated to African Americans who were
economically depressed in South Bronx section of New York
City. It is described as complex because the term ‘hip-hop”
comprises of four elements which are, “delaying, rapping,
rhyming, graffiti painting and b-boying.” It is also regarded as a
culture which promotes fashion, music, visual art, language and
expression. Hip-hop as a genre is accompanied with its
important position in world history, in order to be able to
understand it evolution, it should be noted that it has its own
heroes and legends. Furthermore it also has its accomplishments
and also downfall. Due to how hip-hop originated most African
Americans feel like they have a duty to protect their identity as
blacks in America. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: This is a
pretty good introduction to hip hop, but what is your question?
What are you going to attempt to explain with application of
theory? State this clearly in your first paragraph.
Over the years hip-hop has been viewed as a significant
contributor towards fashion, hip-hop started influencing fashion
since the 70’s and continued to thrive up to the
1990s.Furthermore, currently in the 21st century its influence is
still felt and it has advanced to better designs inspired by “hip-
hop”. The documentary by Netflix, ”Hip-Hop Evolution” also
managed to give a clear picture of how “hip-hop” emerged from
New York this is illustrated through the childhood memories
which explained how the genre advanced even in terms of
fashion influence. The movie also inspired designers such as
Marc Jacobs who sent models who had the foundation of youth
culture street style. This demonstrates how hip-hop and high
fashion were recognized as intertwined and has continued to be
appreciated in our current times.
During the 80s and 90s prominent hip-hop personalities began
showcasing their personal style as hip-hop stars. The stars were
such as Salt-N-Pepa, Run-DMC, LL Cool J among other hip-hop
artists. However this trend has continued to advance among
recent hip-hop stars. For instance Kanye West who is a
celebrated hip-hop artist is behind the much hyped Yeezy line.
Artist like ASAP Rocky has also played a role in promoting
Dior Homme and Calvin Klein accessories in advertisements.
The theory of Bourdieu has had a big impact on social theory
and how it brings out a better understanding on sociology and
how social life is structured to function. The advancement of
hip-hop in regards to its influence on fashion explains clearly
on Pierre Bourdieu concepts in his social theory (Burnard,
2016). The extent at which hip-hop has managed to influence
fashion depicts the social understanding as explained by Pierre
explanation on social theory. Comment by Laurel Duchowny:
What exactly is Bourdieu’s theory? And what about hip hop will
you explain by applying this theory? Give a brief but strong
overview of Bourdieu’s theory before discussing how it applies
to hip hop. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: The idea is for
Bourdieu to explain hip hop, not the other way around.
Hip-hop is a genre which is believed to have originated from the
streets of New York by African Americans. Most of them were
said to be economically depressed hence they were not able to
afford anything. However, according to Bourdieu’s theory of
cultural capital it is argued, “Capital formed the foundation of
social life and dictated one’s position within the social order.”
Therefore when it comes to the evolution of hip-hop they had
created a culture that was comprised of depression over lack of
money. The social life of black Americans was dictated by the
position they occupied in social life. Moreover most hip-hop
artist were associated with violence, this was part of their
upbringing which influenced them. The theory cultural capital
explains on why cultural capital is a major source of social
inequality. When hip-hop began it was regarded as an insurgent
movement hence it was associated with danger. Comment by
Laurel Duchowny: Good. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Say
more about this.
During the times of Compton’s N.W.A and East Coast/West
coast rivalry hip-hop as a genre of music became difficult to
promote to luxury brands. Hip-hop was not deeply involved in
the fashion world. However the way most hip hop artists
dressed at that particular time demonstrated, how it had a
certain level of social capital among the black community.
However modern hip-hop has advanced its relationship to
fashion; it now promotes luxury and finer things in life whereby
celebrities also promote fashion trends. Hip-Hop artists such as,
“Nicki Minaj, Drake, Cardi B, Pharrell and others” have been
able to promote fashion trends and also the major pop-culture
(Grenfell,2014). This emphasizes on the social position in one’s
social life, recent hip-hop celebrities have been able to dictate
on fashion trends because of their social position in life as
argued by Pierre. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Explain.
Initially when hip-hop culture was introduced the fashion
related to it was more of infused with playfulness and also some
certain sort of freedom. Most of the hip-hop artist in the past
had a relaxed mode of fashion; this was in accordance to the
way of life on the streets. Most of the members who enjoyed
hip-hop culture were not rich however they managed to create
their own form of fashion which they enjoyed. Television
programs such as MTV videos and also, “The Fresh Prince of
Bel-Air” among others had characters who portrayed the relaxed
culture towards fashion sense. However as times have evolved,
the internet and social media has transformed fashion sense.
This days the hip-hop effect has brought advanced fashion wear
such as louche tracksuits and Balenciaga’s among hip-hop
culture.
The concept of Habitus by Bourdieu’s can be categorized as
influential when it comes to hip-hop and how it influences the
culture of fashion. The definition given by Bourdieu on this
concept is that it is, “the physical embodiment of cultural
capital, to the deeply ingrained habits, skills, and dispositions
that we possess due to our life experiences.” In Hip-hop most
people grew up in backgrounds that were questionable
economically. However most of them including the stars
managed to create their ways of fashion and how they conducted
themselves. Also the recent hip-hop artist also lived a modern
lifestyle as hip-hop culture had transformed hence as a result of
life experiences, the celebrities advanced they fashion wear
hence it trended. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: This whole
section is really good. It needs another sentence or two
explaining how the example connects to “habitus.”
Additionally Bourdieu’s also explained on his theory of the
game itself. Hip-hop as a genre was mostly associated with
African-Americans who were based in New York. Furthermore
Hip-hop was mainly associated with masses who were not
economically empowered (Medvetz, 2018). The hip-hop
community was mostly associated with the black community. As
much as hip-hop has managed to advance over time embracing
modern fashion it is still mostly associated with black
community. Bourdieu was right in his argument that, “the social
world as being divided up into a variety of distinct arenas.”
Therefore hip-hop culture had managed to trend all over the
world influencing the type of fashion embraced in our recent
times. Hip-hop culture managed to spread all over the world
since people started becoming interested in their culture and
also fashion. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: What game?
Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Guy, this is a good, but
rough first draft. You have some good ideas in there, but they
need further development, and a stronger connection to the
theory. Please reread the piece on Bourdieu in the textbook, and
gain a stronger understanding of his theory.

The advancement of hip-hop in regards to its influence on fashion explains clearly on Pierre Bourdieu concepts in his social theory (Burnard, 2016). The extent at which hip-hop has managed to influence fashion depicts the social understanding as explained by Pierre explanation on social theory. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: What exactly is Bourdieu’s theory? And what about hip hop will you explain by applying this theory? Give a brief but strong overview of Bourdieu’s theory before discussing how it applies
  • 3. to hip hop. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: The idea is for Bourdieu to explain hip hop, not the other way around. Hip-hop is a genre which is believed to have originated from the streets of New York by African Americans. Most of them were said to be economically depressed hence they were not able to afford anything. However, according to Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital it is argued, “Capital formed the foundation of social life and dictated one’s position within the social order.” Therefore when it comes to the evolution of hip-hop they had created a culture that was comprised of depression over lack of money. The social life of black Americans was dictated by the position they occupied in social life. Moreover most hip-hop artist were associated with violence, this was part of their upbringing which influenced them. The theory cultural capital explains on why cultural capital is a major source of social inequality. When hip-hop began it was regarded as an insurgent movement hence it was associated with danger. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Good. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Say more about this. During the times of Compton’s N.W.A and East Coast/West coast rivalry hip-hop as a genre of music became difficult to promote to luxury brands. Hip-hop was not deeply involved in the fashion world. However the way most hip hop artists dressed at that particular time demonstrated, how it had a certain level of social capital among the black community. However modern hip-hop has advanced its relationship to fashion; it now promotes luxury and finer things in life whereby celebrities also promote fashion trends. Hip-Hop artists such as, “Nicki Minaj, Drake, Cardi B, Pharrell and others” have been able to promote fashion trends and also the major pop-culture (Grenfell,2014). This emphasizes on the social position in one’s social life, recent hip-hop celebrities have been able to dictate on fashion trends because of their social position in life as argued by Pierre. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Explain. Initially when hip-hop culture was introduced the fashion
  • 4. related to it was more of infused with playfulness and also some certain sort of freedom. Most of the hip-hop artist in the past had a relaxed mode of fashion; this was in accordance to the way of life on the streets. Most of the members who enjoyed hip-hop culture were not rich however they managed to create their own form of fashion which they enjoyed. Television programs such as MTV videos and also, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” among others had characters who portrayed the relaxed culture towards fashion sense. However as times have evolved, the internet and social media has transformed fashion sense. This days the hip-hop effect has brought advanced fashion wear such as louche tracksuits and Balenciaga’s among hip-hop culture. The concept of Habitus by Bourdieu’s can be categorized as influential when it comes to hip-hop and how it influences the culture of fashion. The definition given by Bourdieu on this concept is that it is, “the physical embodiment of cultural capital, to the deeply ingrained habits, skills, and dispositions that we possess due to our life experiences.” In Hip-hop most people grew up in backgrounds that were questionable economically. However most of them including the stars managed to create their ways of fashion and how they conducted themselves. Also the recent hip-hop artist also lived a modern lifestyle as hip-hop culture had transformed hence as a result of life experiences, the celebrities advanced they fashion wear hence it trended. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: This whole section is really good. It needs another sentence or two explaining how the example connects to “habitus.” Additionally Bourdieu’s also explained on his theory of the game itself. Hip-hop as a genre was mostly associated with African-Americans who were based in New York. Furthermore Hip-hop was mainly associated with masses who were not economically empowered (Medvetz, 2018). The hip-hop
  • 5. community was mostly associated with the black community. As much as hip-hop has managed to advance over time embracing modern fashion it is still mostly associated with black community. Bourdieu was right in his argument that, “the social world as being divided up into a variety of distinct arenas.” Therefore hip-hop culture had managed to trend all over the world influencing the type of fashion embraced in our recent times. Hip-hop culture managed to spread all over the world since people started becoming interested in their culture and also fashion. Comment by Laurel Duchowny: What game? Comment by Laurel Duchowny: Guy, this is a good, but rough first draft. You have some good ideas in there, but they need further development, and a stronger connection to the theory. Please reread the piece on Bourdieu in the textbook, and gain a stronger understanding of his theory. Reference Grenfell, M. J., & Bailey, R. (2014). Pierre Bourdieu.
