GLAMwiki & Rock climbing - Museo Soumaya

  1. 1. GLAM-Wiki: A History… …and a rock climbing metaphor Liam Wyatt / @Wittylama / [[user:Wittylama]] #50Horas #GLAMWIKI Museo Soumaya, Mexico – 27/9/14
  2. 2. An interesting thought to start… 30% under-reporting of traffic to Wikipedia. Particularly under-counting mobile-views and developing countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2014-09-17/News_and_notes Wikipedia is the world’s 5th most visited website; 500Million unique visitors per month; the largest education project; and largest publication in history (?) …and it is actually 1/3 bigger than we thought!
  3. 3. What we do here MATTERS. NO other web community calls itself a movement. Knowledge for Everyone – a Petition. Wikimedia Foundation (CC-By) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j-ktiYTTds
  4. 4. The Dolomites – Italian/Austrian border
  5. 5. The ‘Via Ferrata’ (Constructed WW1)
  6. 6. Because of their pioneering work, what used to be extreme is now accessible to many. http://www.europeana1914-1918.eu/ “Tofana”
  7. 7. The ‘via ferrata’ provide access to impossible places to those who have the commitment to try.
  8. 8. Last weekend I was able to access somewhere most people would never normally be able to see. It is a privilege. It is thanks to pioneers I do not know who piece-by-piece made the path easier. And, although it cost money to get there, the ‘via ferrata’ itself is free.

  12. 12. Born 5 years, 1 month ago https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI_Recommendations We are doing the same thing, for the same reason, for the same people, in the same medium. Let’s do it together. “Arte para todos”

  14. 14. Why are we more alike than different? “All studious and curious persons” - 1759 “Free access to the sum of human knowledge” - 2001 Internet, wiki, encyclopedia (…both on January 15!)

  17. 17. Metrics! Much work still to be done… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/British_Mus eum#Outcomes_2 http://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/baglama2/#gid=24&mo nth=201408
  18. 18. Wikipedia & Rock climbing Just like the ‘via ferrata’, we provide access to impossible places to those who have the commitment to try. We decrease the distance between the person who has the curiosity and the previously inaccessible information.
  19. 19. Thank you WM-MX, Ivan Martínez, Alfonso Miranda & the Museo Soumaya Peace, Love & Metadata Liam Wyatt / @Wittylama / [[user:Wittylama]]
