Why do we have governments

  1. 1. WHY DO WE HAVE GOVERNMENTS?<br />
  2. 2. There is no human society in existence which<br />does not have some way of choosing leaders<br />and forming a government. While most<br />individuals and groups can be social and<br />cooperative, they can also be violent and<br />warlike. <br />Reason #1<br />
  3. 3. Give them security,<br />To accomplish goals that can only be done by a large group (ex. build roads). <br />A government also allows people with differing ideas to live in peace. <br />They promote the common good and individual rights.<br />People need politics and the government to:<br />
  4. 4. Reason #2<br />Governments exist then to keep peace within a<br />society and to protect or defend it against<br />possible attacks from other societies.<br />
  5. 5. How do they do this?<br />Make laws—this is used to control or direct the behavior of people.<br />Create a police force<br />Raise an army<br />
  6. 6. To carry out these duties, governments need<br />money that they get from the people of their<br />society through taxes (property, sales and<br />income tax as well as money made from<br />licenses, taxes on businesses. Governments also<br />borrow money).<br />Reason #3<br />
