Us vs uk models of government modified version

 1. 1. THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF DEMOCRATIC SYSTEMS UNITED STATES FORMAT VS UNITED KINGDOM FORMAT
 2. 2. What is DEMOCRACY ?

“ a political system in which the power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them.”

“ Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.”

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/democracy

 3. 3. UNITED KINGDOM MODEL OF DEMOCRACY

Most nations that used to be run by England tends to have a PARLIAMENTARY STYLE OF GOVERNMENT .

A country will be divided into CONSTITUENCIES that will elect a person to represent that area in the government called a MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT .

 4. 4. PARLIAMENT

PRIME MINISTER = the leader of the party that wins the greatest number of seats becomes the.

OFFICIAL OPPOSITION = the leader of the party with the second greatest number of seats becomes the.

All opposition MPs that won a seat in parliament works to keep the government honest.

MPs here are hand selected whenever a seat is available by top people in the land who have done good things for their country.

Place where laws are made, taxes are determined, and decisions for the country’s issues are made.
 5. 5. TWO HOUSES House of Commons House of Lords Make laws Change taxes Discuss country issues Vote again on decisions made in House of Commons to make sure they are good ideas for the country
 6. 6. UNITED KINGDOM’S POLITICAL PARTIES

Labor Party

Conservative Party

Liberal Democrats Party

Scottish National Party/Plaid Cymru

Democratic Unionist

Sinn Fein

Groups in the government who represent the interests of certain groups of people that are like-minded. The political party with the greatest number of MPs will run the country.
 7. 7. HOW DOES THIS WORK?

Let’s pretend we have 5 political parties that want to run our country:

The orange people

The green people

The blue people

The red people

The purple people

There are 260 seats in parliament to win.

 8. 8. VOTING TIME!

The orange people --- 100 MPs

The green people --- 75 MPs

The blue people --- 50 MPs

The red people --- 25 MPs

The purple people --- 10 MPs

What is the job of each of the parties after the election???? Who runs the country?

 9. 9. WHY WOULD THE PHILIPPINES WANT THIS SYSTEM?

It is very hard to be corrupt under this system because there are so many experienced, talented and educated people whose job it is to keep the leaders of the country HONEST. All debate in Parliament is PUBLIC!

But the Philippines is modeled on the US form of government, which has both advantages and disadvantages.

 10. 10. UNITED STATES SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

President & Vice President = the most powerful people in this system who get elected separately from all other government positions.

The losers have no role after the election.

The president, once he wins, hand picks his top people such as the Secretary of State, Minister of Defense, Justice, Interior, Agriculture called his CABINET.

 11. 11. Congress

Underneath the President is CONGRESS which is two houses:

SENATE (2 senators from each state)

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES (number depends on the population of the state).

They make laws and approve of the decisions made by the president and his cabinet.

These people are voted into government in their state.

IF the president has people voted in who are from the same political party as he is, his job is easy

 12. 12. U.S. POLITICAL PARTIES

REPUBLICAN = conservative

DEMOCRATIC = liberal

The US is special in that there are really only two major political parties in the country. Most democratic nations have several political parties.

Groups in the government who represent the interests of certain groups of people that are like-minded.
 13. 13. JUDICIAL BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT

In both the US and in the UK model of government, the highest power goes to the court system—the SUPREME COURT . This group of judges can OVER TURN a decision by the Prime Minister or President if they do something that breaks the law of the land.

CAN YOU SUE YOUR GOVERNMENT?
