Popular business media is filled with articles hailing mobility and Enterprise Mobile Applications (EMAs) as the catalyst in the next wave of business transformation. It’s not hype. C-level executives are intrigued by the possibilities.

Who should lead the effort to fundamentally transform the way workers get things done? We believe it's an opportunity for CIOs to become organizational change agents by applying their vast technical expertise.

Driving innovation for transformation

  2. 2. HIGHLIGHTS How CIOs Can Capture the Opportunity in EMAs Popular business media is filled with articles hailing mobility and Enterprise Mobile Applications (EMAs) as the catalyst in the next wave of business transformation. It’s not hype. C-level executives are intrigued by the possibilities. Who should lead the effort to fundamentally transform the way workers get things done? We believe its an opportunity for CIOs to become organizational change agents by applying their vast technical expertise.2 © 2012 WIPRO LTD | WWW.WIPRO.COM
  3. 3. The Consumer-Influenced EMA Mindset Fast Cycle Collaborative Engaging Iterative These are all attributes of the new innovation process for IT  Understand that the employees are mobile app experts. They have consumer-oriented expectations, and consumer behavior points to a quick dismissal of apps that may be visually appealing but provide little real value  To develop many apps in the hope of having a single hit is not affordable  For EMAs to be adopted—and, most important, for them to be transformational—you have to solve a real problem and add real value. To achieve that, IT organizations must operate like product teams 68 percent of smartphone owners open only five or fewer apps at least once a week, and 80 to 90 percent of downloaded apps are eventually deleted. In fact, an app that’s retained by 30 percent of consumers is considered truly sticky.3 © 2012 WIPRO LTD | WWW.WIPRO.COM
  4. 4. Adopting the Innovation Process  We need a product development team layered into a traditional IT team — a combined effort consisting of people capable of gleaning customer insights about what they want to do, and translating those insights into high-value EMAs  Employees don’t necessarily know what they want or what will help them. The team must take the time to walk in their shoes, closely observing them and asking questions  Companies insist that their teams focus on new insights first and technology second in order to consistently hit the mark  The serious innovators will challenge their teams to force-rank customer insights and then, and only then, have their teams create solutions for the biggest one they find For this model to work, CIOs must nix long development cycles that are aligned with budget cycles and prepare for rapid change and even a little uncertainty about what’s coming next. Creating Transformational EMAs is about rapid experimentation and iteration.4 © 2012 WIPRO LTD | WWW.WIPRO.COM
  5. 5. Next Steps This approach is a radical departure for IT departments and CIOs, but it’s crucial. Link change to business strategy What is the transformation you’re aspiring to? What are some modest approaches you can start with? Identify the functional areas that affect these goals and how EMAs—and what kinds of EMAs—can help achieve the targets. Start the innovation process a step at a time Get feedback, learn, iterate. Repeat. It’s a cycle that requires patience—even with success— and perseverance. Inevitably something won’t work and you’ll have to backtrack. Communicate EMA’s benefits and "sell" it Marketing team can assist with that by leveraging the insights you originally gleaned from potential users as a guide to communicate the benefits of this new "product”. Incentivize potential users to download and try it You must listen to their feedback to improve it, replicate it in another context, or be ruthless about retiring it if it winds up with low perceived value.5 © 2012 WIPRO LTD | WWW.WIPRO.COM
  6. 6. Food for Thought  Mobility is in the process of changing the way we work and run our businesses, and creating transformational EMAs is one of the most absorbing challenges CIOs have ever faced  Collaborative EMAs from third-party providers can offer incremental improvements in your business—but thats not transformational. To achieve the full potential of mobility to reinvent the business, one must evolve one’s IT development process into one based on innovation and user insights  Today’s C-Suite is looking for that crucial competitive edge, and they believe Transformational EMAs are the answer. It’s up to CIOs to deliver6 © 2012 WIPRO LTD | WWW.WIPRO.COM
