Primary focus is to reveal the
unconscious content of a
client’s psyche in an effort to
alleviate psychic tension.
Rooted in psychoanalysis –
Tends to be briefer and less
intense than psychoanalysis

Rational Emotive Behavior
Therapy ( Type of Cognitive
Behavior Therapy) – Started by
Albert Ellis
Group Therapy
 One or more therapists treat a small group of
clients together in a group
 This type of therapy is not the first option, since
there can be trust issues, sharing intimate
information with strangers.
 People in group therapy improve not only from
the interventions of the therapist, but also from
observing others in the group and receiving
feedback from group members. It has several
advantages, although it does not provide the
one-to-one attention.
 By seeing how others handle similar problems,
the patient can add new coping methods to his or
her behaviors.
Biomedical Therapies
Drug Therapy
Electroconvulsive Therapy
Psychosurgery
 In The Medical Model, the client
is seen as unwell and the
therapist use their skill to help
the client regain health.
 The extensive use of the DSM-V
(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders) comes out
of the medical model.
Therapists or practitioners
combine aspects of multiple
types of therapies.
Uses the techniques and
theories that work best in a
specific patient’s situation,
rather than sticking solely to
the methods of one
discipline.
Cultural Barriers sometimes
prevent members of ethnic
minorities from benefitting
from health resources.
Therapists must be culturally
sensitive to a client’s
background and world-view.
