  4. 4. Will’s route <ul><li>Previous life (lives) & previous research focused degree (Biology) </li></ul><ul><li>OT course (2 year accelerated MSc Level) </li></ul><ul><li>OT Researcher / Research Assistant </li></ul>
  5. 5. Pros <ul><li>Very clinical research </li></ul><ul><li>Have a good level of understanding of research already. Pathway relatively straightforward </li></ul><ul><li>Provides opportunities to network with diverse range of OTs and experience in other areas (e.g. Teaching) </li></ul><ul><li>Excellent self management skills / skills that are relevant to a regular band 5 position (if not higher) </li></ul><ul><li>Experience in speaking, a thorough working knowledge of the research process.... Lots! </li></ul>
  6. 6. Cons <ul><li>Strange looks! </li></ul><ul><li>“Well we wouldn’t hire you” or “Well, you would have to start as a normal graduate” </li></ul><ul><li>Slower to get going on the ladder </li></ul>
  7. 7. Things I’ve learnt <ul><li>Research takes time </li></ul><ul><li>Enthusiasm comes and goes.. But all good in the long run </li></ul><ul><li>Determined to make contacts and network </li></ul><ul><li>Overall its fun! </li></ul>
  8. 8. Things to be aware of <ul><li>Education system banding is different from AfC </li></ul><ul><li>New “clinical researcher” role under AfC Banded at 6 and 7 for specialist (h ttp :// nhsemployers .org/pay-conditions-1988. cfm ). NB: under generic therapies </li></ul>
