  2. 2. <ul><li>English Language Exam – Paper 2 </li></ul><ul><li>This paper is made up of two parts: Poetry from other cultures and traditions and Analyse, Review and Comment. It is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. </li></ul>

Assessment objective: AO2 <ul><li>AO2 </li></ul><ul><li>Reading (En2) </li></ul><ul><li>Candidates are required to demonstrate their ability to: </li></ul><ul><li>(i) read, with insight and engagement, making appropriate references </li></ul><ul><li>to texts and developing and sustaining interpretations of them; </li></ul><ul><li>(ii) distinguish between fact and opinion and evaluate how information </li></ul><ul><li>is presented; </li></ul><ul><li>(iii) follow an argument, identifying implications and recognising </li></ul><ul><li>inconsistencies; </li></ul><ul><li>(iv) select material appropriate to their purpose, collate material from </li></ul><ul><li>different sources, and make cross references; </li></ul><ul><li>(v) understand and evaluate how writers use linguistic, structural and </li></ul><ul><li>presentational devices to achieve their effects, and comment on ways </li></ul><ul><li>language varies and changes. </li></ul>

You will have to compare one of the poems from your pre-release booklet with one that you have not seen before. It is important that you read the poem through very carefully, annotating as you do so. You will be looking for the use of language, rhyme scheme, structure, imagery etc. Make sure that you show understanding that the texts are from other cultures and compare the similarities and differences. Two thirds of the marks for this question are for what you write about the unseen poem. </li></ul>

Marks 19 - 27 Key words: ‘detailed’, ‘perceptive’ • Offers a full and detailed interpretation, insight and understanding of the content of the Poetry texts; • makes perceptive references to the Poetry texts; • selects or quotes pertinent material and makes perceptive supporting comments; • collates material and makes perceptive cross references between the two poems in support of the answer; • shows detailed understanding and sensitive appreciation of how the writer(s) use language and structure to achieve their intended effect. For the marks of 25 - 27, candidates should display exceptional ability in the skills cited above, together with sustained sensitivity to the language of both poems.

You are reminded to comment on the </li></ul><ul><li>cultural aspects of the poems. </li></ul><ul><li>1. Poetry from Different Cultures and Traditions </li></ul><ul><li>Read the poem, ‘Exile’ opposite which was written by James B Johnston who left Ireland </li></ul><ul><li>for the United States of America in the 1970s. Then remind yourself of the poem, </li></ul><ul><li>‘ Escape Journey, 1988’ on page 15 of the pre-release booklet. </li></ul><ul><li>Write about the poems: </li></ul><ul><li>• explaining what is being described in ‘Exile’ </li></ul><ul><li>• analysing how the writer has used language effectively in ‘Exile’ </li></ul><ul><li>• comparing and contrasting some of the ideas and places presented </li></ul><ul><li>in ‘Exile’ with those presented in ‘Escape Journey, 1988’. </li></ul>

  12. 12. “ Sustained sensitivity to the language…” <ul><li>What does this mean? </li></ul>Tom Leonard’s poem ‘Unrelated Incidents’ employs a heavy dose of irony in order to pose to the reader an important question. Leonard believes that prejudice exists towards those with Glaswegian dialects. In transforming the standard BBC received pronunciation into Glaswegian, Leonard probes at the reader’s own prejudices: “ yi widny wahnt mi ti talk about thi trooth wia voice lik wanna yoo scruff”. Firstly, Leonard addresses the reader of the poem directly in order to challenge their own assumptions. Secondly, he uses a derogatory colloquial term “scruff” to emphasise how those who do not talk with a BBC accent are perceived as less reliable or even less intelligent. This is all done with great irony, as of course, the BBC persona that Leonard has adopted is “talking” in a Glaswegian dialect.
