  2. The African Food Insecurity Crisis The African food insecurity crisis is rapidly becoming more serious. Data from 2021 shows that acute food insecurity has risen by around 60% in a single year. W ith the added challenges caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic combined with ongoing drivers such as political mismanagement and conflict, the evidence suggests that things are only going to get worse. Key Drivers of Food Insecurity The primary driver of food insecurity across Africa is conflict. Violence and war cause people to become displaced and result in serious food shortages in many regions of Africa.
  3. Willah Joseph Mudolo | 3 Climate events in east Africa, including flooding and locusts, have caused increased levels of food insecurity. Road closures and other transportation issues caused by the pandemic have left millions short of food in areas such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. Several southern African nations have also been affected by political crises leading to hyperinflation. COVID-19 The COVID-19 pandemic has placed even greater strain on a system that was already struggling. Lockdowns, border closures, prolonged transit times and lost jobs have reduced food access and caused many farmers to have goods returned as spoiled.
