Mechanism of sports injury
Sohel Ahmed
(MPT)- Sports Injury
What is injury?
• Injury that occurs during athletic activity or
during practice
1. Overuse injury
• Due to rapid increases in frequency, intensity, or
duration of repetitive action during work or at play
• Occurs when any biological tissue is stretched
beyond its physical limit
• Eg. Tendinopathies, bursitis, stress fracture, synovitis
Causes of overuse injury
• Lack of appropriate muscle strength or endurance
• Muscle imbalance
• Inflexibility
• Training error
• Inappropriate equipment
• Faulty technique
Prevention
• Warm up and cool down
• Proper equipment
• Correct technique
• Proper strength and flexibility
2. Collision with other athlete
• Some sports require physical contact between the
players e.g. Football, basketball, handball
• Contact with the athlete causes an athlete to be off
balance and sometimes if serious may lead to injury
• It can causes fracture, sprain, strain, brusing
3. Collision with an object
• Collision with an object during contact sports
may result in injuries, for example fall on the
ground during football may causes sprain,
strain or fracture
4. Infringement of rules
• It in common in rugby, boxing and basketball
• E.g. during basketball blocking, pushing or illegal
guarding or illegal hand use can be a threat for
athlete that may causes injury to other athlete
5. Dangerous technique
• Sports like martial arts, boxing, gymnastics involves
various dangerous techniques that can causes injury
like head injury, cervical and spinal injury
6. Force overload
• Loading excessive weight need the muscle to
produce more force that can be beyond its normal
limits causing muscle tear and damage
• E.g. In weight lifting microscopic tear of the muscle
and tendon can occur when the athlete lift the
weight beyond its normal weight limit
7. Missile injury
• Can be due to sports equipment or any others kind
of flying objects hitting the athlete
• E.g. ball hitting the player on the ground
8. Environmental factor
• Environmental factor play a crucial role in maintaining
the performance of athlete during the game
• A. Temperature
• B. Air quality
• C. Altitude
9. Equipment factors
• Poor or inappropriate equipment can be a
predisposing causes for injuries in sports
• E.g. inappropriate footwear for runners can be
causes foot pain and shin splints
10. Vehicular accident
• Injuries can be caused as a result of vehicular
accident during the sports e.g. cycling, racing
11. Unsafe manipulation of psychology
• Unsafe manipulation of normal psychological balance
of the body can compromise athletic performance
and negatively affect health
12. Drug abuse
• Self prescription, overdose of a medicine
• Use of performance enhancing drugs
• Use of steroids
13. Failure to treat existing pathology
• If the injury is not treated properly it can be a
predisposing factor for other injury or re-injury
• Rehabilitation of injury is important before the re-
participation of athlete into the sports.
14. Complication of treatment
• Side effects of drugs
• Mobilization and manipulation can causes
joint subluxation
• Hydrocollator pack can causes burn
Thank You
