TechEd: Windows Server 2012 R2 Features (MDC-B205)This session was presented by Jef f Woosley, and covered the new f eatures coming up in Windows Server2012 R2. Windows Server 2012 was the biggest OS release since Windows 2000, and R2 promises aboatload of new f eatures.IntroMicrosof t Cloud OS VisionPrivate Cloud – Windows Server + System CenterVirtualization f or consolidation is NOT a cloud. Are you just virtualizing, then you are NOT doingcloud computing.Clould is reqestable, cloud is usage based, cloud is chargeablePeople are highly f ocused on the hypervisor but completely overlook managementOne Cloud OS Vision has three pillars and one consistent platf orm:1. Private cloud is about control and security2. Public cloud is about scale: Of f ice 365, Windows Azure, Azure Virtual machines3. Service Provider is about customizationWindows Server 2012 powers the entire Azure inf rastructureMS provisions 25K VMs a day f or test/devWindows Server 2012 R2 EnhancementsFocus: Datacenter without boundaries, cloud innovation everywhere, dynamic application delivery,f lexible and consistent application platf orm, enable people-centric ITVirtualization – Hyper-V 2012 R2Cross-version live migrationOnline VHDX resizeAutomatic VM activationLive VM export/cloningRemote Access console via VMBus (does not rely on RDS or networking)Live migration compressionLive migration with RDMAMore robust Linux supportHyper-V 2012 R2 DemoTeaser demo f rom the Hyper-V session later today. Showed a VM that was hammering storage and slowingdown all other VMs on the same host or SAN. With 2012R2 and enable minimum or maximum IOPS on a per-VM database. IOMeter showed a drop f rom 20K IOPS to 100 IOPS, with a setting on the VM.
2012R2 has enhanced Linux support. Full hot-add and remove of dynamic memory with Linux guests. Full ondynamic memory, complete f eature parity with Windows implementation. Support f or f ull Linux backups in aconsistent state. File consistent backups with zero downtime. Similar to VSS f unctionality in Windows, butf or Linux f ilesystems.Clustering VMs without iSCSI or Fibre Channel shared storage. Can now share VHDX f iles between VMs f orclustering. Fully supported in production environments. Cloud service provider can now provide clusteringservices without having to expose iSCSI or raw LUNs to VMs.Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage EnhancementAzure does NOT use SANs. It uses cheap direct attached storage. SANs do not scale and are veryexpensive. Laser f ocused on driving down cost per IOPS. Storage is cheap, IOPS is not.Windows Storage Spaces now f eatures block-level automated data tieringData deduplication enhanced in R2 (now with running VMs)Flexible resiliency options (enhanced in R2) – Three way mirrors, write-back cache,Pooling of disksDemoed creating a physical clustered f ile server using VMM 2012 R2. VMM connects to the baseboardmanagement controller (e.g. ILO) of the server, boots the server into WinPE, and deploys a standard VHDXand conf igures the Windows OS f or f ile services. With a f ew clicks a share was created, and provisioned toHyper-V VMs f or storage.Challenges of Guest Clustering (MDC-B337)Shared VDHX enables guest clustering within a tenant without accessing raw LUNs or iSCSI disksSoftware Defined NetworkingAllows you to move VMs and workloads f rom private cloud to public cloud to service providersProvides seamless experience f or business agility and ease of managementLive migration across subnetsBreaks VLAN scalability limitsMerge networks on same f abric2012 R2 provides in-box multi-tenant edge gateway f or seamless connectivity to Azure and serviceproviders or internal networks2012 R2 Gateway enables direct routing or NATSystem Center is the control plane, Windows server is the data planeF5, Iron Networks, Huawei and Arista are providing additional gateway optionsCisco, NEC, 5 Nine (security), InMon (packet capture) f or Hyper-V extensionsHyper-V 2012 R2 ReplicaBroaden your coverage of business continunity with hybrid cloud solutions spanning on-prem andthe cloudEnhanced in R2 f or cloud providersTertiary replication in the boxHyper-V Recovery Manager (new) - Conf igurable down to 30s window, recovery orchestration withAzure Hyper-V
