  2. 2. Christmas Trees (their history & traditions) The fir tree has been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years. Fir branches were used to decorate homes during the winter solstice, to remind people that spring would come. The Romans used Fir Trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia.www.whychristmas.com
  3. 3. Christmas Trees (their history & traditions) Having proper ‘Christmas Trees’ probably started about 1000 years ago in northern Europe. Early Christmas Trees were often hung upside down, from the ceiling, on hooks! Branchers of cherry trees or hawthorn plants were also used at Christmas.www.whychristmas.com
  4. 4. Christmas Trees (their history & traditions) The first documented Tree was in 1510 in Riga, Latvia. This might have been a Paradise Tree (a wooden structure decorated with ribbons and apples). A German a picture from 1521 shows a tree being paraded through the streets; and a record from 1570 says a decorated tree was displayed in Bremen, Germany.www.whychristmas.com
  5. 5. Christmas Trees (their history & traditions) There are many stories about who first had a tree with lights on in a house. Some say it was Martin Luther. He is said to have put candles on the tree to remind us of the stars after taking a walk through the forest one evening.www.whychristmas.com
  6. 6. Christmas Trees (their history & traditions) The first Christmas Trees were decorated with paper flowers, gingerbread & gold covered apples. Then glass makers started making small ornaments of items of fruit, such as apples. At first, a figure of the Baby Jesus was put on the top of the tree. Over time it changed to an angel/fairy or a star.www.whychristmas.com
  7. 7. Christmas Trees (their history & traditions) Christmas Trees first came to Britain sometime in the 1830s. They became popular in 1841, when Prince Albert (Queen Victorias husband) had a Christmas Tree in Windsor Castle. A drawing of “The Queen’s Tree” was published in 1848 in the UK and 1850 in the USA.www.whychristmas.com
