Pay It Forward

  2. 3. Pay It Forward <ul><li>The term to “pay it forward” is defined as the act of voluntarily helping another without the expectation of being paid back. It is the constant state of “doing good” unto others as you would want things done unto you. In a nutshell, it is performing random acts of kindness without expecting anything in return. </li></ul><ul><li>If the party that you bless, insists on paying you back, you insist that they “pay it forward” by doing something kind for someone else. </li></ul>

Foundational Text <ul><li>“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. </li></ul><ul><li>By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” </li></ul><ul><li>~Gospel of St. John 13:34-35 </li></ul>

The Love of God <ul><li>Different Kinds of Love </li></ul><ul><li>Eros: A romantic love between two people </li></ul><ul><li>Phileo/Philadelphia: brotherly/sisterly love </li></ul><ul><li>Philandros : love for a husband </li></ul><ul><li>Philanthropia: love for mankind </li></ul><ul><li>Storge: love between family members </li></ul><ul><li>Thelo: Something you love to do, take delight in </li></ul><ul><li>Agape: Affection, unconditional love </li></ul>
  5. 6. The Love of God <ul><li>Why is displaying this kind of love through acts of kindness important? </li></ul><ul><li>Because one of the signs of the times and end of the age is that the love that most people have will grow cold. (Matthew 24:12) </li></ul>

God Is Love <ul><li>“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. </li></ul><ul><li>He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. </li></ul><ul><li>In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.” </li></ul><ul><li>~1 John 4:7-9 </li></ul>

Attributes of The Love of God <ul><li>Love is… </li></ul><ul><li>Patient - makrothumeo : to be long-tempered, long patience, longsuffering, to forebear. </li></ul><ul><li>Kind- chresteuomai : Denotes kindness, mild </li></ul><ul><li>Does Not Envy - zeloo: Moved with jealousy, to boil with envy, hatred, or anger </li></ul><ul><li>Does Not Parade Itself - perpereuomai: to boast in one’s self excessively, self-aggrandizement </li></ul>

Attributes of The Love of God <ul><li>Love Is… </li></ul><ul><li>Not Puffed Up- physioo: to be puffed up, to bear one's self loftily, be proud </li></ul><ul><li>Does Not Behave Rudely- aschemoneo: To act unbecomingly, act unseemly (indecent or improper) </li></ul><ul><li>Does Not Seek Its Own- zeteo heautou: Demanding things of/for themselves </li></ul><ul><li>Is Not Easily Provoked- paroxyno: To irritate, provoke, arouse to anger, to exasperate, to burn with anger </li></ul><ul><li>Thinks No Evil- logizomai kakos: Keeps no records of wrong done </li></ul>

Attributes of The Love of God <ul><li>Love… </li></ul><ul><li>Does Not Rejoice in Iniquity- chairo ou epi adikia: unrighteousness of heart and life, a deed violating law and justice, act of unrighteousness </li></ul><ul><li>Rejoices in the Truth- sygchairo aletheia: </li></ul><ul><li>to rejoice with, take part in another's joy, what is true in things appertaining to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth </li></ul>

Agape Challenge <ul><li>In line with the last study (Hearing God’s Voice), </li></ul><ul><li>tune in to the voice of the Holy Spirit and “pay it forward” to someone in the coming week. </li></ul><ul><li>During next week’s class, be prepared to share your story to about how the Lord lead you to minister to that person and their response to your act of kindness. </li></ul>
