Power Shovel are used
primarily to excavate
earth and load into
tractor or truck
Size of shovel is
indicated by size of
dipper expressed in
cubic meters(0.5 to 5
cubic meters).
BASICS PARTS AND OPERATION
TYPES OF POWER SHOVEL
•1. Crawler mounted:- It is mounted on crawler and
it posses low travel speed. It can be operated on
soft ground
•2. Wheel mounted:- It may be self-propelled or
truck mounted. It posses high speed and it is
suitable for hard surface

DRAGLINE
The dragline is operation
of dragging the bucket
against the material to be
dug.
A dragline can dig and
dump over larger distance
than shovel can do.
Its Capacity of is in cubic
meters.
OPERATIONS OF DRAGLINE
FACTORS AFFECTING OUTPUT OF DRAGLINE
•Size and type of buckets. (Light bucket, Medium bucket & Heavy bucket)
•Length of boom ( 50ft, 60ft & 70ft)
•Type of material (Loose, dry & soft materials)
•Angle of swing (Horizontal angle measured in degree) (90degree)
•Depth of cut (0.29m3 to 3.1m3)
•Working Condition (large open space)
•Size of Hauling ( trucks desired size to avoid delay)
•Skilled operator (experienced person)
TYPES OF DRAGLINE
•Crawler mounted:- low speed
Soft ground
•Wheel mounted:- High speed
Paved ground
•Truck mounted:- High speed
Paved ground
BACK HOES
Excavating machine
of power shovel

It is termed as hoe,
back hoe & pull
shovel.
BASIC PARTS
• Boom
• Jack boom
• Boom foot drum
• Bucket and bucket sheave.
FACTORS AFFECTING HOES
• The output is about same as that of power shovel of same size and
digging in same class material
• Depth is increased output of hoe will decrease
• Greater output is obtained when digging is done near the machine
• Depth of cut is depends on type of materials, size and type of
bucket
SELECTION OF HOES
• Maximum excavation depth required
• Maximum working radius required for digging and dumping
• Maximum dumping height required
• Hoisting capability required
CLAM SHELLS
• The name of machine
is derived from shape
of its bucket that of
shell fish with hinged
double shell, which
can be opened into
two parts.
BUCKET
• Selection of bucket depends on
requirements of job.
• It consists of two shells or halves which
are hinged at top and provided with
sharp edge at lower end.
• Types:- Light bucket, medium bucket &
heavy bucket.
• Bucket capacity is 0.38m3 to 3.06m3
EFFECTIVE USE OF CLAM SHELL
• Unit should be placed on level ground
• Bucket teeth should be sharp
• Distance of unit from digging and dumping place should be equal
• Working in soft material teeth of backet should be removed
TRENCHING MACHINES
• Trenching machines can excavate in all type of soil except rocks
APPLICATIONS
• Water, oil & gas pipe lines
• Sewers, where job condition are suitable for them
• Drainage ditches
• Telephone cables
TYPES
1. WHEEL TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES
WHEEL TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES
• Excavating part of machine consists of power driven wheel, on
which are mounted a no of removable buckets
• Buckets are available in various size
• They can cut trench width of 30 to 150cm
• Maximum cutting depth is 2.5 to 3m
• They have digging speed 30m or more in any job
2. LADDER TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES
LADDER TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES
• Excavating parts of ladder type machine consists of two endless
chain which travel along the boom to which are attached cutter
buckets equipped with teeth
• It can cut maximum trench width up to 360cm
• Maximum cutting depth is 9 to 10m
• Digging speed is 30m or more for various job
3. VERTICAL BOOM TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES
VERTICAL BOOM TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES
• This machine is modification of ladder type machine
• It is available in 7 different boom size which allow trench width
from 40 to 70cm

  • 2. POWER SHOVEL Power Shovel are used primarily to excavate earth and load into tractor or truck Size of shovel is indicated by size of dipper expressed in cubic meters(0.5 to 5 cubic meters).

  • 4. TYPES OF POWER SHOVEL •1. Crawler mounted:- It is mounted on crawler and it posses low travel speed. It can be operated on soft ground •2. Wheel mounted:- It may be self-propelled or truck mounted. It posses high speed and it is suitable for hard surface

  • 6. DRAGLINE The dragline is operation of dragging the bucket against the material to be dug. A dragline can dig and dump over larger distance than shovel can do. Its Capacity of is in cubic meters.
  • 8. FACTORS AFFECTING OUTPUT OF DRAGLINE •Size and type of buckets. (Light bucket, Medium bucket & Heavy bucket) •Length of boom ( 50ft, 60ft & 70ft) •Type of material (Loose, dry & soft materials) •Angle of swing (Horizontal angle measured in degree) (90degree) •Depth of cut (0.29m3 to 3.1m3) •Working Condition (large open space) •Size of Hauling ( trucks desired size to avoid delay) •Skilled operator (experienced person)
  • 9. TYPES OF DRAGLINE •Crawler mounted:- low speed Soft ground •Wheel mounted:- High speed Paved ground •Truck mounted:- High speed Paved ground
  • 10. BACK HOES Excavating machine of power shovel group It is termed as hoe, back hoe & pull shovel.
  • 11. BASIC PARTS • Boom • Jack boom • Boom foot drum • Bucket and bucket sheave.
  • 12. FACTORS AFFECTING HOES • The output is about same as that of power shovel of same size and digging in same class material • Depth is increased output of hoe will decrease • Greater output is obtained when digging is done near the machine • Depth of cut is depends on type of materials, size and type of bucket
  • 13. SELECTION OF HOES • Maximum excavation depth required • Maximum working radius required for digging and dumping • Maximum dumping height required • Hoisting capability required
  • 14. CLAM SHELLS • The name of machine is derived from shape of its bucket that of shell fish with hinged double shell, which can be opened into two parts.
  • 15. BUCKET • Selection of bucket depends on requirements of job. • It consists of two shells or halves which are hinged at top and provided with sharp edge at lower end. • Types:- Light bucket, medium bucket & heavy bucket. • Bucket capacity is 0.38m3 to 3.06m3
  • 16. EFFECTIVE USE OF CLAM SHELL • Unit should be placed on level ground • Bucket teeth should be sharp • Distance of unit from digging and dumping place should be equal • Working in soft material teeth of backet should be removed
  • 17. TRENCHING MACHINES • Trenching machines can excavate in all type of soil except rocks APPLICATIONS • Water, oil & gas pipe lines • Sewers, where job condition are suitable for them • Drainage ditches • Telephone cables

WHEEL TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES • Excavating part of machine consists of power driven wheel, on which are mounted a no of removable buckets • Buckets are available in various size • They can cut trench width of 30 to 150cm • Maximum cutting depth is 2.5 to 3m • They have digging speed 30m or more in any job

LADDER TYPE TRENCHING MACHINES • Excavating parts of ladder type machine consists of two endless chain which travel along the boom to which are attached cutter buckets equipped with teeth • It can cut maximum trench width up to 360cm • Maximum cutting depth is 9 to 10m • Digging speed is 30m or more for various job
