Parables of Jesus Series
"If you have to be dirt, be good dirt”
The Parable of the Sower
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
While Pastor Rick is on a sabbatical, each Sunday we will have a message
on selected parables. This week, David Snook shared a message on "The
Parable of the Sower" - the characters, the meaning, and his
recommendations on how to understand and apply the message in this
He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them
across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and
ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The
seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon
wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they
died. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the
tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a
crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had
been planted! Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
In this story, Jesus is the sower, and we are the dirt. He scatters His
seeds to everyone, but only those who listen and understand bear fruit,
We should remember that we are not the heroes of this story, God is the
hero. We are merely the dirt. But we are more than just the ground,
we are the battlefield. Obedient, godly actions that spread the message
are the plants that grow in good soil.
Are you hard-packed and resistant to God's message? Are you rocky soil
that doesn't allow the roots of the message to grow deep? Is your life
full of thorns and worries? Or are you good dirt that produces more
Here are some recommendations that we can draw from this parable.
Relax: you're just the dirt. With God's help, we can choose to be
Don't judge other dirt.
Be enthusiastic, but discerning.
Make room for God
Be happy dirt.
It is all about choice, so choose now to be good dirt!
