1. How to Identify if There is Mold in Your Home

Perhaps there is mold in the laundry room from an overflowing washing machine. Maybe
condensation from the toilet or a leaking pipe has provided the right environment for the growth
of mold in the bathroom. It’s even possible that a leak in the roof has caused there to be mold
in the attic. There are as many possible causes for mold growth as there are sources of water
so how does someone go about identifying and cleaning up mold growth?
Mold in dry areas can be caused by improper dry out after a flood.
In many cases, the first thing that people will notice is the smell. The presence of mold growth
will usually give off a dank, musty smell. This smell is usually very recognizable, particularly in
cases of severe mold growth. The presence of a dank, musty or mildewed smell is a very good
indication that there is most likely mold in the area. If you suspect possible mold growth,
following that smell will help to locate the source.
Another identifier is the presence of water or damp spots. Since moisture is required for mold
growth, signs of water damage can indicate a mold growth hotspot. A room that has recently
had flooding or other water damage has a very high risk of having mold in it somewhere if the
water removal wasn’t done properly. If you notice a musty smell, looking for damp surfaces or
standing water can alert you to the location of mold growth. Wet areas that have a dank, musty
smell most likely have mold in them growing somewhere.
Lastly, and what may be the most obvious of the ways to identify and locate mold in a home, is
visually. Harmful mold growth often appears as black patches throughout the area that has the
mold in it. Early on in a case as this can be small, scattered patches, but over time these
patches will increase in size as the mold continues to grow and expand and they will eventually
grow together into large, black areas on a surface. In cases where the water source isn’t
constant or has been small enough to not be noticed, the actual appearance of mold may be the
first thing noticed. The problem is that by the time mold spots are visible there may be a much
larger problem out of sight. A corner with some scattered mold growth may be a sign of mold in
the wall.
