Biogeochem cycles

  1. 1. Biogeochemical Cycles Sept. 3rd-4th, 2013
  2. 2. Biogeochemical Cycles: Phosphorus Cycle Nitrogen Cycle Water Cycle Carbon Cycle
  3. 3. Nitrogen Cycle Key Vocab Words: Ammonia Proteins Denitrification Nitrogen-fixation
  4. 4. What is the purpose of the nitrogen cycle? Our atmosphere is 78% nitrogen gas. Animals and plants cannot directly use all the nitrogen found in our atmosphere. Therefore, we need nitrogen-fixing bacteria to “capture” nitrogen and convert it to a usable form.
  5. 5. Step 1: Atmospheric Nitrogen (N2)
  6. 6. Step 2: Ammonification
  7. 7. Step 3: Nitrification
  8. 8. Step 4: Assimilation
  9. 9. Phosphorus Cycle Key Vocab Words: Pollution Basins DNA
  11. 11. Step 1: Phosphate Added to soil
  12. 12. Step 2: Phosphate is fixed & available
  13. 13. Step 3: Plants take up phosphorus
  14. 14. Step 4: Plants removed, cycle continues
