  2. 2. General information• Tablet: a mobile computer equipped with a large touchscreenas the main input device.• Form factors:• Slate tablet: Samsung Series 7.• Convertible tablet: Asus Eee PC T101MT.• Features: portable, mobility, touchscreen, wireless access,docking, software integrated, etc.

Screen• Screen sizes: from 5 inch (Dell Streak) to 7 inch (SamsungGalaxy Tab) and 10 inch (Apple iPad); 12.1 inch (HP EliteBook),13.3 inch (Fujitsu LifeBook T900).• Display resolution: ranges from 800x480 (Coby Kyros) to1024x600 (HP Slate 500); 1024x768 (Apple iPad 2); 1280x800(Acer Iconia Tab A500)• How to enter data:• Pen (stylus).• E- ink (if supported by application).• Text Input Panel.Image source:

Touchscreen• Touchscreen: an electronic visual display that can detect thepresence and location of a touch within the display area(Wikipedia).• Two basic system of tablet devices touchscreen:• Resistive screen: detects a touch on a screen through pressure.• Capacitive screen: also detects changes in electrical fields butdoes not rely on pressure.Image source: Tech Mania and Telecom Circle
  5. 5. Inside a tablet• Microprocessor.• Battery.• Accelerometers and gyroscopes.• Graphics processors.• Flash-based memory.• WiFi/GPS/antennas/Bluetooth devices.• Power supply.• Speakers.• A touchscreen controller chip.• Camera sensors, chips and lenses.• No fan.

  9. 9. Storage capacity• Most tablets used flash-based memory.• Advantages: faster access and low power usage.• Disadvantages: low capacity (16 GB – 64 GB).• Some manufacturers still put HDDs in their tablets for highercapacity.

Operating System• Previous: tablets run only on PC operating system only.• Nowadays: tablets also fit in with variations of smartphoneoperating system.• Examples:• Googles Android 3.x (Honeycomb): Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.• Apples iOS: iPad, iPad 2.• Windows 7 Tablet: Lenovo IdeaPad, Acer Iconia W500.• WebOS: HP TouchPad.• BlackBerry Tablet OS: RIMs BlackBerry PlayBook.
